Just Wonderin’
1 Wonder if remembering is sometimes over rated;
The pro and con of this idea at least might be debated,
For if forgetting is no sin and could be made to serve,
‘Then we could say, ‘oh I forgot,"’ without the least
] Wonder if there are times when it is better!
to forget than to remember. In thinking the matte¢+
cover, . begin to feel certain that there are times when
-a bit of forgetting might perform a signal service, to
«ourselves and those about us.
This line of thought, with its ultimate conclusions,
_ cwas suggested by a letter from a valued eastern cor' respondent. She wrote of the propdsal to reconstruct
the Surrender house at Appomattox and dedicate it to
the memory of one historic day in the annuals of The
American saga.
The old building in which two strong men once
stood face to face “one in the trappings ‘of glory, one
in the gloom of defeat,” was torn down and the materials removed or lost in the passing of years. It is now
planned to erect a replica of the old building at a cost
of fifty thousand dollrs and to restore, in so far as possible, the setting and furnishings of the original.
My correspondent wondered if it would be wiser to
use that rather large amount of money for some other
purpose and allow the memories of that day of surrender to become less poignant as the years drift by.
Still, in this day of confusion, it might be well to revive the facts surrounding the American struggle for
human rights and the sacrifices endured by both north
-and south in that great struggle which removed the
the severed nation into one complete whole, strong and_
° eouahene ;
North and south at this time, vitally interested in
‘the preservation of basic rights which are the equal intheritance of both, guaranteed by the constitution and
the bill of rights. The time has come when we must
all take a stand upon the firm foundation laid down
by the men of old and build still more firmly upon the.
principles of humanity, justice and liberty for all. Perihaps the rebuilding of the Surrender House will prove
to bea forceful reminder of those things for which
America has long contended, and arouse in patriotic
hearts the determination to stand boldly for.that which
is of good repute in our national record a @ mation.
