Lions Auxiliary
Gives Fashion
Show Tonight
With “County Youth Organizations’’ camp at Scots Flat as the
purpose of their benefit enterprise,
Nevada City Lions club auxiliary,
has arranged a modern fashion
show for the Nevada City high
school gymnasium tonight at 8
p.m
This fashion show of current
styles only has been called
“‘Pashion Parade of 1949’ and will
find many of the city’s misses and
matrons in the role of modeling
some of the season’s distinctive
styles.
The fashion show will be presented with the flare and finesse
of metropolitan centers including
a musical background, unusual
decorations and narration by
Frances. Mason, kindergarten instructor.
Coincident with the fashion
show at the gymnasium, will be a
cake sale by members of the Lions
auxiliary.
All proceeds will go to the fund
to provide a summer camp at
Scots Flat for young people of
the two communities.

Party Friday Afternoon
Mrs. Frank Farmer, Pine street,
entertained her Mah Jongg club
Friday afternoon. Among those
present were Mrs. Annie Sherman,
Mrs. Kaye Stenger, Miss Annie
Richards, Miss Katie Eddy, Mrs.
Mamie Filler, Mrs. Arthur Hoge,
Mrs. George Gildersleeve, Mrs. H.
F. Sofge. High score went to Mrs.
Sherman and second prize was
‘won by Miss Richards.
Civic Club Will Meet
At Methodist Church
Hall Wednesday Noon
Nevada City Women’s’ Civic
club will meet Wednesday at a
buffet luncheon at the Methodist
Church hall. Mrs.’ Frank Schmidt
will be in charge of the 1 o’clock
lunch. Mrs. Byron E. Brock, club
president, will be in charge of the
meeting.
Election of officers and installation will be held under the supervision of Mrs. William Perry.

Meet Here Tonight
Evangeline Chapter No. 9, Order
of Eastern Star, will meet tonight
at 8 p.m. in the Masonic hall.

Nevada City Hardware company,
a pioneer concern, were purchased
by the Alpha Hardware and SupPly compny and moved to the
Alpha’s location. Mr. Carl R.
Murchie who for many years had
successfully conducted the _ busines of the Nevada City Hardware .
joined the staff of the Alpha Hardware company.
William ‘Fouyer, popular young
man about Nevada City, was appointed to the state motor traffic
squad to work with Joe Blake.
A son was born-to Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Hiscox of Nevada City at
the Nevada City sanitarium.
Thelma Boreham, Dorothy Tamblyn, and,.Ann Williams were the
committee chairman of the
Mother’s: Day program presented
at the Nevada City high school.
The program included Margaret
Rector, Ruth Smith and Ruth
Noyes in a stunt, a speech by
Bernice Eden, a solo by Mary
Jones and a reading by Nany
Jones.

At a meeting of Pennsylvania
Engine company in Nevada City
resolutions of respect to the mem-.
ory of Officer William -H. Kilroy,
murdered by Ed Moore while pursuing his duties as night watchman, were adopted and a copy of
them were given in trust to the
guardian -of the deceased’s little
son, Elza.
The citizens of Washington
called a meeting to make arrangements for the proper observance of
July Fourth. A committee was
appointed as follows: George E.
Cloud, C. T. Worthiey, E. C. Grissel, E. T. Worthley, J. S. Kramer
and L. B. Self.
The County Board of Education
met and adopted questions for the
grammar school school grade examinations to take place at the
end of the school year The board
also renewed the grammar grade
certifictes of Mrs. John Hitchens,
Miss Agnes Curtis and Miss Sadie
Clauson.
The new dwelling being erected
at the top of the Sacramento street
hill in Nevada City for Superintendent Loughridgt of the Nevada
City narrow gauge railway
nearing: completion under tthe direction of Oscar Brown and was
a neat addition to that part of
town. The building was wired and
piped for gas and electricity and
contained plumbing.

Teachers’ Institute of
City was presided, over by
President Preston. Miss Effie
Peters gave an exercise in the
teaching of reading, Mr. McAllister and Mr. Preston addressed the
group: upon the proper manner of
teaching penmanship, Mr. Zellers
discussed the teaching of grammar,
-rof. Allen illustrated the teaching
of history, and Prof. Henning explained his method of teaching
arithmetic. Prof. Henning provoked

The clerk of the Nevada City

Members of Cub Pack 28, their
parents and friends met Thursday
night at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer park for their May Pack
meeting.
The meeting opened with the
official presentation of colors by
Ronnie. Williams and Don Lee
with the flag salute led by Ted
Ness.
> Cubmaster Onda (Doc) Smith
presided at the meeting and presented the awards.
Bobcat “eas were received by
Warren Scribner, Denny Williams,
Billy Kolstead, Stanley Dale Hornberger, Sherman Hanley, David
Estes, Edgar Stahschmidt.
Wolf. awards went to Don Smith
and Ted Harless.
Bear awards were presented to
Clifford Pooler, Harold Hummelt,
Russell. Steele, Bobby Rideout, Bob
Cullen and Jim Shock.
Grim Smith was elected assistant Denner of his den.
Harold Hummelt won an emblem
for winning the award for three
consecutive months as “Keeper of
the Buckskin.”
Gold Arrows were presented to
the following Cubs: Jerry Kyle,
Russell Steele, Ted Harless, Harold Hummelt, Jim Shock, Cifford
Pooler, Charles Eden and Don
Smith.
Silver. arrows were received as
follows: Keif Melberg (3), Russell
Steele (2), Jerry Kyle (2), Ted

For special awards Den 4 won
the ribbon for achievements with
80. Den 4 also took
the handicraft division with their
plentiful display of hand painted
lasses and plaster of paris brooches
they had made for their mothers.
Special award for the best skit
went to Den 5 for their novel
recitation of ‘“‘The Village Blacksmith.’’ Those taking part in the
presentation were: Cliff Pooler,
Grim Smith, Jim Kendrick, Bobby
Steger, Jim Shock, Don Lee, Ronnie Wililams and Ted Ness.
Parent attendance award was
won by Den 4. Inspection honors
went to Den 2 and Den 5 each
showing 100 per cent. From cub
attendance Dens 2, 4 and 5 were
100 per cent.
Cubmaster Smith announced
that next month the last. pack
first place in
‘meeting for the summer would be
held June 9 at 6:30 in Pioneer
Park. It was decided to have this
meeting in the form of a_ potluck supper if the weather permitted. The boys gleefully received
the news that their new handicraft
project is work In ciay.
