THE ROOF FELL IN!
DROPPED FLY GIVES NEVADA CITY
6-3 WIN OVER COLFAX FIREBALLS,
KIENLE STRIKES OUT 15 LOCALS
Nevada City gained its second win of the
1949
Placer-Nevada baseball league Sunday afternoon at Colfax when Right Fielder Barnes dropped what would
have been the final pitch of
the game. Colfax was leading 3-2 in the ninth inning, two were out, the bases were
loaded. Tony Kosinski*
looped a long curving fly
ball to. right field. Barnes
ran obliquly after it and the ball
pounced from his glove, rolled to
the fence and the bases were emptied of Jones, Perry and Ralph
Childers while the luckless right
Thompson scored Kosinski from
third with his third hit of the day
for Nevada City’s sixth run but
it. was an anti-climax. The damage was done, the roof had fallen
in and the Colfax Fireballs, pride
of Scoop Thurman, had lost.
The game had been a terrific
defensive battle until that point
with Kienle having a_ pitching
edge over Perry. Perry relied all
knuckler and
brilliant fielding behind him kept
the hitless locals in the game.
Kienle struck out 15 Nevada City
batters and allowed but five hits.
Perry gave up seven hits and
fanned two.
Thompson singled in

Kienle threw the ball

Colfax tied it up in the fifth.

Kosinski slapped a high outside
pitch over the centerfield fence in
the sixth and Nevada City was
ahead once more, 2-1.
Marson singled, Hutchinson was
hit by Perry, Hill sacrificed them
forward and Sypnicki singled them
home and the Fireballs were out
im front for the first time 3-2.
‘Nevada City loaded the bases
in the seventh, eighth and ninth
inning but couldn’t score until the
horrible error in right’ field broke
up the game in the ninth.
Fouyer was out on an attempted
squeeze play in the seventh. Kosinski was forced at home in the
eighth in attempts te tie the
game.
In the fatal ninth Goldsberry
was safe on an error to open the
inning, but was forced at second

bases. Radley struck out. Kosinski
flied to right field for what should
have been the final out. of the
game. Thompson singled to score
Kosinski. Cameron grounded out
to end the inning.
Sypnicki. opened the Fireball’s
half of the ninth with a single.
Barnes flied to Jones. MeGahan
drove his third fly into Kosinski’s
hands and Kienle grounded out to
end the game.
After watching the fine defenSive play of the Nevada City,
Allen G. “‘Scoop’’ Thurman, secretary of the Placer-Nevada league,
probably has an answer to ‘his
published wonderment that Nevada
City beat Placerville.
