NEVADA CITY: Chief of Police) Max Solaro reported that
early Sunday morning burglars
had broken into the Diamond
Match Company office on the Nevada City-Grass Valley Highway
and had turned the half ton safe
upside down. They attempted to
open it with a sledge hammer
and crowbar.
Apparently they were frightened away by the police patrol about
4:45 A. M. The patrol found nothing had been taken. They had
left their crowbar and sledge hammer behind. Solaro suspects that
four youths were involved.

Farmers See Forage
Grass Test Plots
GRASS ‘VALLEY: Nevada
County farmers yesterday viewed
a number of test plots of forage
grasses. William Brooks, local farm
adviser, stated that the tour began at 10 A. M. from the Huggens
Ranch on the: Marysville Highway. Luncheon was. served in
Banner Grange Hall, and the tour
ended about 3 P. M.
The trip revealed pasture plants
that have been grown without
irrigation, others that have used
commercial fertilizers, and grasses
and clovers growing on burned
over brush lands.

NEVADA CITY: The Women’s
Civic Club of this city has elected
Mrs. ~Harleth Brock president,
succeeding Mrs. Hazel Morrison.
Other officers chosen are Miss
Gertrude Goyne, vice president;

treasurer. Mrs. William Perry was
named program chairman and
Mrs. George Gildersleeve, chairman of the publicity committe.
Liquor Sales Case
Is Appealed
NEVADA CITY: Appeals have
been filed in the. -superior court
here by William Jelinick and
Lorene Stagno, from the judgement in Grass Valley Township
court in which Jelinick was found
guilty of selling liquor to a minor
and Mrs. Stagno was charged with
consuming it. They were fined
$100 each,

o’clock Saturday afternoon at
Watt Park for an overnight ride.
They rode to Cherry Acres .of

GRASS VALLEY: Miss Juanita Booth, daughter of Mrs. Thora
Booth of this city, has been
named assistant professor of med.
ical nursing in Yale University,
effective July 1st.
Miss Booth received her nursing training in’ the Sacramento
County hospital. She attended the
Sacramento College and the University of Cdlifornia, where she
graduated in 1940. She worked
four years as a public health nurse
in Bakersfield, Kern County, then
went to Columbia University
where shewon a master’s degree.
On hér graduation she was given
a -recommendation to the Yale
post.

Foothill League
Schedules Fall Sports .
GRASS VALLEY: , Representatives of the schools in the Sierra
Foothill League met last evening
sports programs
and winter months.
The meeting was held in the
Grass Valley High School.
This year the San Juan High
School of Fair Oaks will have a
place on’ the program. The school
was voted into thé league
year and this will increase the
number participating to seven
schools. San Juan will also enter
the Spring baseball, track and
tennis activities.
