While Callao has little to interest the traveler in
the way of historic monuments, the capital city of

interest which ail travelers visit; not that it is a thing
of any great beauty. The Cathedral itself; however,
built in the early sixteenth century, is beautifully proportioned and richly decorated in the manner of the
early Spanish friars. :
On two sides of the plaza were-shops-and stores,
the most imposing in Lima, where everythin could
be purchased from American shoes and shirts to antiquarian silver work made by Peruvian artisans three
centuries ago.
On the other side lies the palace of the government. This is most interesting and very attractive,
with patios within, whose singing birds and luxuriant
verdure delight the eye and ear.

NEVADA CITY—ON THE
THRESHOLD TO THE BEST
old palace of the former viceroys of Spain, which is
one of the most marvelous pieces. of artisanship in
-the Western Hemisphere. Inside and out, master craftsmen in wood and stone grill and embossed work, toiled
for many years, and the nature of the work can hardly
be duplicated at the present day. A friend of mine,
former Minister of Justice,-who had his law office in
this building, told me that he had planned to build an
extra room on the ground floor which would be in
keeping with his suite in the original building. The
room itself would have cost only about a thousand
dollars to add, but to duplicate the carving and intaglio
such as the other, older rooms, would have cost him
well over twenty thousand dollars: Needless to say,
the room was never built.
Lima as it was thirty years ago and as it is now,
has been so often described by better writers that it is
not in the province of this-‘narrative to gild the lily. It
is sufficient to say that it always has been one of the
nost interesting and historic cities in the Latin republics.
During our stay, we accomplished two things of
ee we managed to convey toa Peruvian carpenter
Ithe idea of how an Oroville rocker for sampling should
‘be built; and we hired a cook:for the expedition.
His name was John, and he was a Savannah born
negro of some thirty years. A wanderer and adventurer
by habit, a braggart by nature, and a four way liar
met to us throughout the entire trip. He claimed at the
time we hired him to have recently crossed the wildest
part of the Andes by way of a trip from Manaos, in
‘Brazil, to Tiripata, in Peru. His harrowing description
lof the trip was most exciting, but later on, he had
such_a wonderful series of adventures to regale us
with that Chris and I started a mild check on his
