. have 8—Nevada City-Grass Valley Nugget—Oct. 14, 1948 ROSEVILLE MAYOR STATES PLATFORM IN SENATE CAMPAIGN By Harold Johnson NEVADA CITY: November 2nd ‘will again bring to us the duty et exercising our privilege of _@lecting the candidates of our ‘ehoice to various offices inthe Wation, State and County. The 7th District will be called “ gpon to elect its senator. The pur@s:a goal to achieve should I-be @lected 4s your’ senator, and I received suggestions and ideas from many, .many persons. Progressive legislation is fully demanded by the pegple ‘and I believe that I have a program which is constructive and necesgary to the development and well being of the district. And before finally soliciting your support on election day, I would feel very remiss if I did mot publicly express my appreciation. for the helpfulness, kindliMess and courtesy extended me guring my campaign for this office. The knowledge I have derived will be most helpful to me dim any event and it is an experi@nce for which Iam deeply grateful. a Still having in mind the great esponsibility I am seeking to as.gume, I am asking for your vote wight ; ( N. L., SR. . \ an To measure the desperation of Harry Truman, President of the United States, who begins to see that he cannot be elected to succeed himself, nothing serves so Vinson to Chief Justic Fred M. talks with Moscow for peace Stalin, f % $b HBut supposing by. some miracle, which Truman eagerly hoped for, Vinson had patched up some kind of peace with the Russian dicthe Presigent! It might even have elected him. Every. man, woman and @¢hild in this country wants peace. If Truman could contrive ‘to. bring it about, we betieve everyone, regardless. of party, would vote for him. a Se But fortunately Truman was dissuaded from sending his-friend to Moscow. It now becomes apparent that he consulted with no one regarding this adventure. Secretary of State Marshall may have been told of it when the plan was finally concluded, but the foreign ministers of, France and Great “Britain heard of it only when the plan had been abandoned. Vinson’s qualifications for his job were nil. He had had no training in the devious twisting and turning -of the Russian politburo or ‘the Russian Communist psychology. Truman’ apparently ‘beliéved he could brief him on al] the intricate phases of Russian statecraft send him on his way, and have him home with a peace pact in his hand that would form a great conclusive argument in favor of Truman before the election. * h H This chimerical scheme is akin to Henry Ford’s peace ship and his plan to.“‘have the boys out of the trenches by Christmas.”’ The + peace ship actually sailed butfortunately Vinson did not, Marsal] and his aides were able to convince President Truman that this attempt at this time would be a tragic bluder. Even though thwarted, the plan weakens the position of the U. S. government in the United Nations and in the world, we believe it has also put _the finishing touches on any chance the. President may have had for re-election. e & An ironical side-light on the Truman plan, is the unqualified approval of it by Henry Wallace, whom the Communists of this country hope. to elect president. {t is Wallace’s purpose to delay, to temporize, to defeat the U. S. course in foreign policy wich this oOuntry is pursuing, He condemns the Marshall plan in Europe. He decries our -refusa] to take our troops out of Berlin. He does not approve the Benelux union of five Western European nations. We wonder how much President Truman enjoys the praise of Henry Wallace,eh We believe the voters of this are 95 percent in favor of the course our state department is pursuing against the spread of Communism. At -last count, there were thirteen men in the Russian politburo. They are ruthless, determined and very capable in their dictatorship. They country are gradually being herded into a corner from which there are just two’exits; to quit or to fight. We believe it quite possible, even
probable, they will choose war. ye & HK As matters stand now, it would appear the first blow will be struck in Berlin without warning, just as the Japanese struck at Pearl Harbor. Apparently our consolidated war department anticipates that war, if it comes, wil] begin in Berlin. It needs only a collision between a yak fighter plane and one of our aerial freight carriers to siart it. When that happened the Russians would have the advantage at first, They would undoubtedly shoot down all food and coal] carriers in the air, and then start shelling our troops. Sometime later the U. S. Congress would meet and declare war. In ,the meantime British, French and American troops in Berlin would take it on the chin. 3 y h : The reason we _ believe the Russians would fight rather than DENTIST 435 ZION ST. PHONE 564-. The body will be cremated in East Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, satisfaction among the Russians themselves. The leadership, like that of Hitler, has embarked on a campaign of expansion. To discontinue the program would weaken the leadership arong their own people. Our own opinion: is that the’ Russian diplomats are stalling now for time. They want more time to develop the atomic bomb, Miss Marilyn West, Leonard Prisk, Will Be Wed October 23 GRASS VALLEY: Invitations have been received by friends and relatives to the wedding of Miss Marilyn West of Colfax, Placer County, and Leonard A.
