while he went on and picked off the rest of his victims, one by one. But Dobbins was too strong for
him. He wrestled with him and grabbed the axe away,
and with one swing of its keen blade, lopped 'Nicholl’s
hand almost off at the wrist. Then he turned and started
down the trail. However, Nicholls had his gun cached
it and shot Dobbins dead as he ran. Then he made
his way down to Dannenbrink’s*cabin, shouted, “‘I’ve
killed Dobbins, but I can’t do any more now,” and
And he was as quiet and inoffensive a chap as
I ever worked with, under normal conditions.
I had another little half breed working for me on
Coffte Creek who was a known killer, and who also
was inoffensive. One day I was walking along the

Apropos of nothing, he remarked, ‘““You know,
“Why is that, Tommy?”’
“Because you never get me nervous and excited, and you never swear at me. I can’t stand having
men swear at me.”

A packer by the name of McNeal was a regular .
visitor at our camp. A quiet, thoughtful Scotsman of
about sixty, someone told me his story. His wife had
run away with a buck negro some three years before,
and had died in Redding after the negro had deserted
her. McNeaf never mentioned her again, but the negro
was foolish enough to come into the country a year
died from one shot immediately, and McNeal was
never even arrested. The case was clear, and justice
had been done—so why bother. :
Not all the memories of this country are sinister,
however. . remember the pleasure of a visit with
former Lieutenant Governor Daggett, who had retired
to Black Bear as postmaster. He had originally opened
up the Ball mine and the Black Bear—two properties .
which had produced milloins. He had lived well while
he had it, and had memories of the great ones in the
early days which were a pleasure to recall. Genial and
kindly, he lived comfortably in his retirement, although
the bulk of his money was gone, and until the day of
his death, was always going to take another fortune
out of the Black Bear mine.
