Veterans and dependents of deceased veterans who, subsequent
to Pearl Harbor day,
eligible for pension or compensation benefits but were preventfed from making application due
to enemy action, may receive ret; roactive awards under a recently
‘approved law, veterans administration said today.
. Existi law contains time
, limits ae applying which govern
ithe effective date of the award.
For example, if the dependents
. of a veteran who died from serv. ice-connected causes file claim
; within a year, the compensation
{payments are made retroactive
'to the date he died; otherwise,
the effective date is the date of
; application.
by an enemy country from making application within the time
limits prescribed, these
limits are waived.
In order to qualify for retroactive payments,
must have been receiving pension or compensation on Aug. 1,
1949, and must apply within a
year from that date.
No application form
need only write VA a letter setting forth the basis of his claim
for benefits and giving the, dates
and place. of internment.
Question: My husband, a world
war I veteran, died of a noneligible for a pension?
Answer: You may be. entitled
if you were married to the veteran prior to. Dec. 14, 1944; your
income does not exceed the limitation established by law and
your late husband’s service meets
the requirements of the law.
Question: What is the time
limit for filing claim for burial
allowance?
Answer: Claim may be filed
within two years from the date
of cremation or permanent burial
of the veteran. ;
Question: I have noticed the
term “statutory award’ from
time to time but have no idea
what it means: What is a “statutory award?”
Answer: A statutory award is
one in which thé amount of the
award is specifically provided by
the governing legislation.
Question: What will I have to
do to have the amount of my

Some Errors Showing
In Veterans Insurance
Dividend Applications
Some errors in filling out application forms for the $2,800,009
National Service life insurance
dividend were reported today by
veterans administration as millions of veterans began applying
for their special payments.
Most common error, VA said. is
failure to include service serial
numbers required under item
four of the application form.
Here the form provides three
spaces labeled respectively “Enlisted”, “Officer” and “Other”.
These labels refer to the class of
serial number, assigned during
service.
Many veterans however are
putting their dates of enlistments
in the first box and their grade
or rank in one of the other two.
VA said that such information is
not necessary for dividend purposes but that the serial number
is absolutely essential.
Some veterans even are failing
to sign.their applications, VA said
after a preliminary check-~,of
early receipts. Unsigned applications will not be considered, VA
said.

A Good Roof
Good Investment
Maybe you don’t fully appreciate the importance of a
good roof. Maybe you think your room is “good enough”
if it keeps water out of the living room. And maybe it is!
On the other hand, your roof does more than protect you '
from the rain. It lets out warm air and lets in cold air in
ifit isn’t in proper shape, In summer, it
lets: the sun’s rays increase your discomfort.
Why not have us check your roof and see if it needs
appraisal, both as to’need and cost.
We have an ample stock of shingles to take care of your
roofing needs. Ask us about your roofing problems.
