POLITICAL PARADE
BY CLEM WHITAKER
Even though the state legislature
is bowling along at a much faster
clip than in former years—and tending to its business with commendable dispatch—there’s still time, be-'
tween committee hearings, to talk a
bit of politics.
Next year is governorship year—.
and the pot’s boiling like an overheated tea kettle.
Governor Olson, being the incumbent gets first consideration. All and
sundry agree that the governor,
while still in the dog house with the
legislature, is handling himself much
better—and the story is out that
Jack Elliott is pulling the public relations strings in the background.
Mr. Olson, with all the strikes as
against him, is rated a serious contender,
Speaker of the Assembly Gordon
Garland, who has taken Mr. Otlson’s
measure in numerous legislative battles, is the next most talked about
gentleman. As Speaker Garland has
put punch into proceedings and
made an enviable record. ADemocrat, but a middle of thé roader, instead of 'a leftist, he would pull.a

Speaker.Garland is undoubtedly Governor Olson’s most potent opponent

to the Middleton Park Hospital. A
letter received’ from Lady Reading
states that‘the needs of the homeless
in Britain are “like the proverbial
bottomless jar’’. Clothing stores and
depots are emptied over night after
a bad bombing attack. Children need
very much warmer clothing and the
thicker shoes, and she speaks of the
ever increasing need of the war nurseries which are being opened to receive babies under 5 years of age.
This: week the San Francisco headquarters willbe closed for spring
cleaning and the local groups will
not meet at the hotel headquarters
during Easter Week. Work is available to take home both in sewing and
knitting.

er, if he enters, For the moment, his
stock eclipses that of Attorney General Earl Warren, hereofore consid-'
ered the major Republican aspirant .
There’s a whispering campaign going on against Warren (that he’s a
blue nose reformist) which isn’t
helping. And State Treasurer Charles G. Johnson, who has always won
re-election to his present office most
handily, is making plenty of progress. Mr. Johnson knows his way
around politidally—@nd he has a
good name; you can’t laugh that off.
in a state election!
Switching back to the Democratic
party, Senator Robert Kenny, the
shrewd boy from Los Angeles, might
split Governor Olson’s vote right
down the middle, if he started. With
Olson and Kenny battling it out for
the liberal and left wing votes, and
with maybe District Attorney Dockweiler of L. A. and one or two others adding to the excitement, Speaker Garland might walk in between
them—and take the nomination. ]
. That’s what you hear, these days
in Capitol corridors. There are many
other names mentioned Of course, and

formidable—in 1942. There’s still a
lot of water to run under the bridge!

It’s a challange to see if I can do it.
That’s what makes the role interesting.
“I think I can. I’ve been riding for
years. Muss up my hair some, brows
me up a bit, and I don’t look much
like those society fellows I’ve played

Young’s never done any roping or
