BELOVED CLASSIC
ON LOCAL SCREEN
FRIDAY, SATURDAY
Sparkling with action and drama,
Gene Towne’s and Graham Baker’s
production for RKO Radio of Johann David Wyss’ most interesting
immortal human story, “Swiss Family IRobBinson,’’ will Wave its premiere here tonight-with a cast headed by such convincing players as
Thomas Mitchell, Edna Best, Freddie Bartholomew. Few stories have
captured the world’s imagination as
. has this 130 year old tale of adventure and peril on a South Sea island,
a tale that has been a best seller.for
more than a century, and the film
faithfully visualizes its spirit and action.
The adventure takes place during
the Napoleonic era when all Europe
was harassed by ‘war jand uncertainty. Robinson, a wealthy Swiss
watchmaker in London, sees his four
children growing up to become useless faddists and in desperation, he
sells everything he owns and sets out
with his rebellious family to begin
a new life in. distant Australia,
In the South Seas a storm wrecks
their vessel. Only the Robinsons survive. When the waves subside they
build a raft, ferry themseves and
some livestock, tools and clothing
to -a-near by island, a tropical. paradise alive with gay colored birds and
strange animals.
Their subsequent difficulties, a
terrific tropical storm that devastates the island and smashes their
carefully built tree house, and the
daily excitement and thrills of their
picturesque lives, all contrast vividly with the emotional drama of the
story—of Robinson’s determination
to make men of his sons despite his
wife’s snobbish attitude.
