W. Scott, engineer for the You Bet Mining Company, was a Nevada City visitor recently. TONOPAH SLAYER OF POLICEMAN ARRAIGNED —~— TONOPAH, April 12th.— Gerald W. Casey, charged with first degree murder of Homer J. O’Connell, former Tonopah police officer, appeared before Judge J. Emmett Walsh in district court Monday and entered a plea of not guilty. Date of trial was Set by the court for April 30. William S. Boyle, Reno atorney, appeared as legal council for Casey, and the state was represented by District Attorney Lowell Daniels. Judge Walsh’ stated this afternoon that he will issue a coall for a venire next Monday. Probably 75 names will be drawn on the first call. Due to the more or less cmoplicated circumstances surrounding the Casey case, it is believed considerable difficuty will be experienced in selecting a jury. GLENDALE, April 12.—A campaign to secure within ten days, 50,000° of the. necessary 111,000 signatures to a petition to restore local option in California has been launched by the American Temperance Federation of Glendale.Petitions are ready for circulation and signatures today, according to E. E. Covert, state organizer of the American Temperance Federation. The initiative petitions ask for an amendment to Article 20, of the State Constitution by the addition of Section 23 which provides: “Upon initiative petition, the legislative “body of any county or city shall submit to the electors thereof, or to the electors of one or more precincts, the question of prohibiting the liquor traffic therein.” The petitions ask for a local option law, which will make it unlawful to manufacture, sell, offer for sale, transport, or possess intoxicating liquors in thé sections -which vote dry.
