A» Interesting Letter on the Subject from
an American in Londoa, .
The Woman’s Humane Society has,
received the following letter trom a)
young St. Louisan, now visiting .
Europe: ‘Standing on London bridge,
yesterday afternogn I made a calcula-!
tion of the effects of blinders on horses. .
I took two’ hundred horses as they
passed, making my selection at ran-.
dom, and I assure you the result was
astonishing, if not apalling. The figthe counties of Nevada, Placer, Yuba,
ures I obtained were as follows: and Plumas, prior to June], 1889.
Horses with both eyes closed, eighteen;
horses with one eye .closed, fifty-four; .
with both eyes partially closed, one;
hundred and eight; with eyes un-!
blinded, twenty. When JI speak of.
eyes being closed, ] mean that the)
blinders either curve round in front.of,
the eyes so that the horse can not see trict.
or are pressed against the eyes.
“Of recent years the front curving .
blindér has come largely into use. A
horse sees-out of -his-eyes, not in front
like a human being, but from the side,
and when a screen is placed along the
side of his eye he is more or less de.
prived of his sight Ina crowded city
where people are constantly being run .
down itisan outrage that such a system is tolerated. Let a~horse see
where he is going and he will try to)
avoid stepping on a person. Any one
who knows how horses on_a battlefield will avoid bodies will not dispute
this. In one-half the instances mentioned the horses were heavy hauling .
horses, and the blinders had not the
weak excuse given by the drivers of
spirited animals. The excuse is generally given that a nervous horse is
kept quieter by being unable to see
every thing. The novelty of allaying
nervousness by partially depriving a
horse of his most valuable sense can
not fail to strike every one. Besides
these aspects, the blinding is essentially cruel and the Royal Humane.
Society ought to suppress it. In any ‘
number of cases, especially with cab
horses. blinders press against the eye
so tightly that the eyelashes are driven
in upon the ball, causing the most exquisite torture day dfter day. FurtherNo.
