Under the caption California,
1853, the Illustrated London, England, News printed a news letter
“From our own correspondent’ dated, San Francisco, Sept, 15, 1853,
in which conisderable space was devoted to the “recent elections.”
“During the past fortnight,” he said
“we have passed through a flutter
or great excitement, consequent upon
our elections of state, county and
city officers. The returns have not
yet come in from the different counties but it is nevertheless, well known
that the Democratic party are strongre-elected their governor, John Bilger’ who is’ acknowledged an unfit
and unvopular personage, but party
in the United States is indifferent as
to it—-they rally to the cry of measures.” ,

Marshall the discoverer of gold at
Sutters "Mill, “while conducting a
