FOOD ALLERGY LINKED
TO ECZEMA OF HANDS
BERKKELEY:: Food allergy may
be the most frecuent cause of. atopic
dermotitis, or eczema of the hands
in the general population.
This is the conclusion of a new
study of 182 cases of dermatitis \of
the hands conducted by Dr.
H. Rome,, nrember of the staff of
the University of California Medical
#. School and allergist in Cowell Hos‘pital on the Berkeley campus. His
results were published in the
chives of Dermatology and Syphilology. :
Dr. Rowe demonstrated food. allergy as the sole or major factor in
eczema of the hands in 80 patients
with elimination diets, With the .reintroduction of the causative foods
in the diet, the eczema reappeared.
Though the hands may be the only
area involved, other areas of the
skin may be affected in varying degrees. Patients with eczema due to
. food allergy on: other areas without
involvement of the hands were not
included in this study.
‘Evidence was presented: by. Dr
(Rowe to show that the diagnosis of
food allergy “in cases of dermatitis

NATURE’S DECEPTIONS
CITED BY ASTRONOMER
BERKELEY: So well has man
ure,» that he has only in very recent
times begun to see through these deceptions.
This is pointed out by Dr. W. F.
Meyer, professor of astronomy on
the Berkeley campus of the Univerpsity of California, who cites common illusions. :
For example the sun can be seen
for several minutes when it is actually below the visible horizon, because of the bending of its light
rays by the earth’s atmosphere. Thus
the sun “rises’’ several minutes before it is above the eastern horizon
and ‘‘sets’’ several minutes after it
has gone below the western horizon,
lengthening the day: from four, to
eight minutes at the expense of-the
night. :
* The sun, the planets, and stars are
never seen where they actually are,
Dr. ‘Myers points out, because of the
time required for light to travel
through great distances of. space.
The sun is always seen where it-was
eight and one third minutes ago—
the time it takes light to travel the
93 milion miles from the sun to
earth. During these minutes the
earth travels nearly, 10,000 miles
from: the position when the light left
the sun.
Similiarly, the light sentout 450
years ago from the pole star, Polaris, is still serving mariners and aviators in locating the position of a
ship or plane at night. Polaris has
traveled an enormous distance since
that time.
