PAGE FOUR GOID NUGGETS FOUND SAN ANDRES, Calif. Aprill6— Gold nuggets weighing in value, $5., and more are being found in developmeant work being prosecuted by the Calmo Mining and Milling Company of Delaware, controlled by Dr. S. T. ~Vandover and associates of St. Louis, Mo., on its 420-acres Slab Ranch property, one mile east of Angles Camp and situated between the Vallecita Western mine, a notable present producer of placer gola, end the Victor mine of the Calaveras Central Mining Corporation, which after several years of preparatory work, is nearing production on a scale which jis expected to make important mining history. Uuder the supervision of William M. Grafflin, general manager, a drift, now 400 feet in length, is being advanced on, the bedrock to reveal a junction of the Vallecito and Ozark ancient river channéls, which, it is claimed, occurs on the propérty. The drift is being run southeasterly from the bottom of a 120-foot. vertical shaft. It is estimated that less than 100 feet of additional drifting will be reuired to reach the objective point, at. which Manager Grafflin expects higrly important developmeants. That the drift is approching interesting territory appears evident from the fact that much of the gravel recently extracted in its extensions has yielded values of$4., a cubic yard, it is stated. A force of 11 men, working in two shifts, is at present emPloyed at the property. B. T. Hickman and Z J. Julin, Los Angles mining men, have taken from the Treasure Hills Mines, Inc., of which WilliamGormley, of Sacramento, is president, a sub-lease on the Hidden Treasure mine, embracing 12. acres, one and a half miles west of Murphys. The property is owned by 0homas Denslow and Matthew Manuel, euipped with a 52-ton ball and peeble mill and cyanide plant, as well as a full complement of mining machin. ery T.he new operators will continue &® ¢crosscut tunnel, now 206 feet in of Murphys, and is fasture of jewelry. The metal is also [ employed extensively in the electrical and chemical industries, in dentistry, and for a variety of miscelit was used in Russia for coniage, and subsequently from time to time it has been proposed by bimetallists as a standard of value. During the recent years the use of platinv™ in, jewelry has been increasing repdly, absorbing approximately 90,000. troy ounces annually. Pure platinum is used to a great; extent in making fine chains and crown settngs for diamonds. Alloys containing up to 25 (‘per cent of irridum with platium! are preferable to re platnum for some work. and can be much more finally chased than gold or any alloy platinum with another metal, but being less ductile than pure platinum are not so desirable in a mounting in which gems have to be reset. — In the electrical industry platinum is lapley used for contact points, in telegraph and telephone apparatus, and in magneto-cotacts. Platinum laboratories and in small-scale commercial electrochemicel work, and the Smee Battery cell is made in part of a plate of silver coated with platinum. In the chemical industry platnum is largely used for catalyzers in the acid; in the elechrdtaohrdl rdllyyp finel concentration of sulphuric acid; n the electrochemical industry; and as the chemical Ware in the form of curcibles, dishes, evaporating pans etc, The contact process for making sulphuric acid has increassed greately within the last 10 or 15 years and this rapid growth has accounted for large puantities of platinum; from 500,000 to 600,000 ounces of the metal are said to be in use as contact mass Platinum alloys for dental work must be hard and manufactured by organic acids. They generally cotain platinum and silver and sometimes gold palladium. Irridum is used in the manafacture of fountain pen points for which purpose the grains require areful selecing. Iridum is well adapted for this purpose, as it is very hard and withBtands abrasion, and writing ink has little or a chemical effect upon laneous purposes. In the early days s length, an additional 200 feet to it. It is also used for standard intersect, at a vertical depth of 400 feet, the Manhattan vein, which has & surface width of 18 to 20 feet, with a two-foot section on the hanging wall assaying $10., a ton it is stated. At the 206-foot point in the tunnel, drifts have been extended 100 feet east and west on the Hidden Treastre vein, exposing three to four of ore which yields an average of $15., ‘a ton in gold, it is stated. estimated at 15,000 tons and assaying from $4., to $6., a ton in gold, a 25-ton, daily capacity ball mill is being installed at the property of the Mar-John Mines Company, seven miles northeast of Murphys. On the 400-foot level of the mine, the Enchantress vein is at present yielding two feet of ore averaging 518. , a ton, it is stated, in, underhand stoping operations fora length of 50 feet, On the 240-foot level, one to four feet of ore, averaging $25., a ton, is being stoped from Calaveras vein it is stated. About 15 tons of these ores are being reduced daily by the present 10-stamp mill and oil flotat»j als. Only a few of such alloys, howweights andcontact points is suitable able for sharp surgical instruments. Gold needles with soldered iridium ends are employed for stitching wounds. It is also used in photography. Palladium has its chief vaule as a substitute for platinum, in palladiumgold alloys, which are used extensively in dentistry, and in jewelry and chemicel ware, It is also utilomical instruments and watches. As the metal is not altered or discolored by exposure to air or hydrogen sulphide, it is often used for Plating, and . because of its relatively low melting point it is well known, particularly in the production of fixed nitrogen from the air: and in the sulphuric acid contact proces. Platinum readily forms alloys with a number of other precious metals as well as with numerious base metever, have industrial imporance. ized in the manufacture of astronTHE NEVADA CITY NUGGET, CALIFORNIA [PORGON MINE PLEASING TO NEW OPERATORS SONORA, Calif., April 16—Two shoots of ore, both ‘in the same vein but at widely separated points, are responding to developmeant in pleasing fashion at the Paragon mine, embracing a group of seven claims or about 140 acres, Jocated on the Tuolumne River, ten miles southeast of Tuolumne. The property is being operated as a private project by the owners, B. A. Whittaker, George Connally and his son, George D. Connally; all of Tuolumne. For more than 35 feet of its total length of100 feet, a drift tunnel, GRABBING CLUTCH MAY BREAK AXLES Breakage of rear axles or some other damage to the rear end of the car will eventually be caused by a severe or grabbing clutsh, cautions the Free Emergency Road Service of the California State Automobile Association. A stripped master gear or broken. drive shaft are among the Possible :results of this condition. ‘NEVADA CITY CLEANERS W. H. Osborne Cleaning, — Pressing, — Repairing advanving on what is believed to be the extension of the vein of the Buchanan mine, famous early: day producer, distant two miles south, has been exposing an orebody averaging in. width three and a half feet and in value $30., a ton in gold, it is learned. The full length of the shoot remains to be determined. Im-, mediately above on the surface, a vertical distance of 100 feet, the same orebody has a width of only 18 to 20 inches but gives assays ranging from $7., to $628., a ton in gold, it is stated. In a crosscut tunnel, 500 feet down the mountainside and 600 feet to the southeast, the same vein has been exposed and an orebody recently revealed which measures three and a half feet in width and averages $11., a ton in,-gold. A drift east on this showing is now under way. The owners are making preparations for the early installation of a 40-ton daily capacity ball mill. f. WHEEL NOISE SHOUID BE CIOSELY OHECKE When a clicking or popping noise is heard in a wheel upon starting or stopping it may be due to a loose axle nut or tire rim, starting to the Free Emergency Road Service of the California State Automobile Assocjation. The possibility of a serious accident may be avoided by placing the car on a jack and checking each wheel carefully. 0 INSPECTION GUARDS ECELTRICAL SYSTEM Most electrical troubles are due to loose or faulty connections which can be avoided if the car is inspected at regular intervals, according to the Free Emergency Road Service of the California State Automobile Association. Lack of frequent inspection is j responsible for a majority of troubles from this source. Generators that are properly inspected and adjusted seldom burn out. For a number of isolated which are cheaper and quite as satisfactory ; but none will replace platinum in many of its various uses, and there is a large and growing demand for purposes for which no economical] substitntes are known, The platinum group of metals are all grayish white, lustrious metals, highly resistant to corrosion, and they melt at a high temperature. The uses of platinum and its allied “metals are many and varied, state Paul M. Tyler and R. M. Santmyers in a report just published by the Bureau of Mines, Platinum is by far the most widely used member of the group. Hither alone or allowéd with others of the group, according to the the requirements for which it is to be used, it enters into numerons industries.
