GOID NUGGETS FOUND
SAN ANDRES, Calif. Aprill6—
Gold nuggets weighing in value, $5.,
and more are being found in developmeant work being prosecuted by
the Calmo Mining and Milling Company of Delaware, controlled by Dr.
S. T. ~Vandover and associates of
St. Louis, Mo., on its 420-acres Slab
Ranch property, one mile east of
Angles Camp and situated between
the Vallecita Western mine, a notable present producer of placer gola,
end the Victor mine of the Calaveras Central Mining Corporation, which
after several years of preparatory
work, is nearing production on a
scale which jis expected to make
important mining history.
Uuder the supervision of William
M. Grafflin, general manager, a drift,
now 400 feet in length, is being advanced on, the bedrock to reveal a
junction of the Vallecito and Ozark
ancient river channéls, which, it is
claimed, occurs on the propérty. The
drift is being run southeasterly from
the bottom of a 120-foot. vertical
shaft. It is estimated that less than
100 feet of additional drifting will
be reuired to reach the objective
point, at. which Manager Grafflin
expects higrly important developmeants. That the drift is approching
interesting territory appears evident
from the fact that much of the gravel
recently extracted in its extensions
has yielded values of$4., a cubic yard,
it is stated. A force of 11 men, working in two shifts, is at present emPloyed at the property.
B. T. Hickman and Z J. Julin,
Los Angles mining men, have taken
from the Treasure Hills Mines, Inc.,
of which WilliamGormley, of Sacramento, is president, a sub-lease on
the Hidden Treasure mine, embracing 12. acres, one and a half miles
west of Murphys. The property is
owned by 0homas Denslow and Matthew Manuel,
euipped with a 52-ton ball and peeble
mill and cyanide plant, as well as a
full complement of mining machin. ery T.he new operators will continue

employed extensively in the electrical and chemical industries, in dentistry, and for a variety of miscelit was used in Russia for coniage,
and subsequently from time to time
it has been proposed by bimetallists
as a standard of value.
During the recent years the use
of platinv™ in, jewelry has been increasing repdly, absorbing approximately 90,000. troy ounces annually.
Pure platinum is used to a great;

and can be much more finally chased than gold or any alloy platinum
with another metal, but being less
ductile than pure platinum are not
so desirable in a mounting in which
gems have to be reset. —
In the electrical industry platinum
is lapley used for contact points,
in telegraph and telephone apparatus, and in magneto-cotacts. Platinum
laboratories and in small-scale commercial electrochemicel work, and
the Smee Battery cell is made in
part of a plate of silver coated with
platinum.
In the chemical industry platnum
is largely used for catalyzers in the
acid; in the elechrdtaohrdl rdllyyp
finel concentration of sulphuric
acid; n the electrochemical industry;
and as the chemical Ware in the form
of curcibles, dishes, evaporating
pans etc, The contact process for
making sulphuric acid has increassed greately within the last 10 or 15
years and this rapid growth has accounted for large puantities of platinum; from 500,000 to 600,000
ounces of the metal are said to be
in use as contact mass
Platinum alloys for dental work
must be hard and manufactured by
organic acids. They generally cotain
platinum and silver and sometimes
gold palladium.
Irridum is used in the manafacture
of fountain pen points for which purpose the grains require areful selecing. Iridum is well adapted for this
purpose, as it is very hard and withBtands abrasion, and writing ink
has little or a chemical effect upon
laneous purposes. In the early days s

a 25-ton, daily capacity ball mill is
being installed at the property of
the Mar-John Mines Company, seven

ores are being reduced daily by the
present 10-stamp mill and oil flotat»j als. Only a few of such alloys, howweights andcontact points is suitable able for sharp surgical instruments. Gold needles with soldered
iridium ends are employed for stitching wounds. It is also used in photography.
Palladium has its chief vaule as
a substitute for platinum, in palladiumgold alloys, which are used
extensively in dentistry, and in jewelry and chemicel ware, It is also utilomical instruments and watches. As
the metal is not altered or discolored by exposure to air or hydrogen
sulphide, it is often used for Plating,

melting point it is well known, particularly in the production of fixed
nitrogen from the air: and in the
sulphuric acid contact proces.
