~ GBOLOGICAL SURVEY
OF CALIFORNIA
Wy Olaf P. Jenkins, Chief Geologist,
California State Division of Mines,
San, Francisco, Calif. .
It seems almost incredible that a
sstate the size of California has-been
without a geological survey for over.
Mhalf a century .Though it is true that
ssignificant reports on geology and
two state geologic maps have been
“issued by the California State Minfing Bureau, it was not until July,
1929, that a full-fledged geological
-ssurvey was established as a branch
eof the state division of mnies, department of natural resources. The
edivision is under the leadersbip of
‘the state mineralogist, Walter W:
Bradley.
The new geologic branch, or geoWogical and economic mineral survey,
“as designated by the state mining
Woard, has many duties, but princiwally, at the start, it is to assemble
tthe scattered geologic data from all
‘sources. available. To evaluate this
Hinformation and to put it in available
fform is the next step. To advance
tthe study of new geologic problems
tis sti a third part of the program.
"Nee preparation of a bibliography
wascconsidered to be the first logical
tatep tin the undertaking. Thousands
eof references to California geology
Shave been assembled from stacks of
fbooks and technical papers, publish¢ed in ‘various parts of the world, and
mmany of the authors of these papers
zare famous men. :
Dr. Solon Shedd of Stanford Uni~versity and one-time state geologist
«cof Washington, is the bibliographer,
-~well suited to thé work, for he is
eeustodian of the Branner Memorial
*Geological Library. His manuscript
Sis now in press, soon to appear as a
Yulletin of the state division of
mnines. 2
A geologic map of the entire
setate of California, to appear on the
sseale of 1:500,000, or eight miles to
tthe ineh, represents another project
eof assembling geologic data in a useful form. It will take some years be“fore this work is completed, how’ «yer, though the compilation of the
map is now well under way; but we
amiay be assured of its accuracy and
Thigh quality of cartography, for it is
#o be engraved by the: U. S. geologietal survey on a co-operative arrangeament with the state.
Every reliable detailed geologic
wmap will be used in the preparation
eof ‘this new wall map, which in its
entire form will stand seven feet
Thigh. But it ‘will -probably ‘appear
@irst in sections, so that parts finishwed before others.may be more speedGly made available. The 36° and 39
warallels divide California into three
econvenient parts, and {t is probable
that the southern :third -will.-be the
@irst to appear; for much “geological
~work in that area has orig esd been
«completed.
‘Major features, mcinnas geology;
mand the grander structures .of the
wtate will be made to appear most
yrominent, in order to give.a broad
~view upon the co-ordinated history
sf the ancient processes ‘that have
Built the rock. construction of .the
. @arth’s surface in this part-ef the
-~world. There is no country which
«contains more diversified geology,
more complicated structure, or more
interesting problems to entice the
wstudent of this useful science than
tthe state of California.
Strange to say, there appears to
Ye only 58 per cent of the state’s
carea which has been mapped with
ssufficient accuracy to:.be .of use: in
‘this compilation, and-of. this amount
wnily 26 per cent has been» published.
“The balance, or 32 per cent, will
then represent unpublished data,
cand this material will be a new conttribution. The remaining 42. per cent .
«of the state’s area has not yet been
ecarefully surveyed by geologists and
mmuch of this territory is not even
well covered by ,good topographic
Ybase maps, or quadramgles. The job,
‘therefore, which Mes before the di* swision of mines of most importaace:
«consists, first of completing the topographic ‘survey of the state, and,
second, of finishing the geological
mapping..
It is gratifying 6 find much willingness among geological departments of various concerns and of
universities to co-operate is the preparation of the geological map of
the state. Though the appropriation
granted he geological ‘survey has
been extremely small, ($20,000 for.
the biennium), much work has been
accomplished. Contributions of lasting value have been secured, often
merely through payment of field expenses for a summer’s work, or the
purchase of. necessary equipment,
maps, or a set of airplane photographs, one of the most useful tools
that geologists have yet discovered.
During this last summer, 12 field
parties have been carrying on work
under the auspices of the geological
branch of the state division of mines.
Rock formations have been mapped
the mineral resources studied, and
careful scientific reports, fundamental to the-development and conservation of the state’s natural resources,
are being prepared which will be of
widespread interest to people in different kinds of business and in various ‘walks of life.
Though California has been slow
in the development of a systematic
geological survey, its is now in order
that the state should do a good job
of it, using the most modern methods
which will stand the test of time. It
is a tremendous job merely to bring
up to date the scattered work which
for half a century has been left unassembled, but once this work of
orientation has been accomplished,
a future of fair sailing should lie
ahead.
The division of mines seeks, therefore, the whole-hearted support of
the mining industry in the development of the geological survey of
California, for geology should stand
foremost in the scientific exploration and development of mineral
products.

FOR TESTING
COMPRESSION LOSS
PLAN
In order to determine wheather
loss of compression is due to valves
or pistion ritigs, the following methad suggested by the Free Emergency
Road Service of the California State
Automobile Association may be used.
First turn the motor with the crank.
Then put some heavy oil in the cylinder to be tested, as oil will temporarily seal the rings. Should compression still -be .weak -the trouble
is in the valves.

NATION'S TYPICAL BOY
AND DOG SOUGHT HERE
Wanted -America’s typical boy
and dog!
The Chapel Kennel Foundation,
Rockford, Illinois, in its search for
the nation’s typical youngster and
canine pal, has appealed to the
Nugget for aid in finding them if
they happen, to be located in this
section.
° Two hundred and fifty dollars in
cash and immortality by having their
likenesses reproduced in oils on canvas'by a famous artist await the chosen pair, which the Foundation is
anxious to preserve for the! inspiration, of futnre generations as a symbol of the high type of chomponship
represented by the boy-dog combination of our own day. The winning
team will also be represented to many
notables, will probably be starred on
the radio and in’ the movies, and in
general enjoy the plaudits of an admiring multitude.
Selections of the winning pair
is to be left in the hands of a jury
prominent men and women which
is now being completed. The choice
is to be made from nominations which
is invited to submit to the Foundation prior to Sept. 15, 1931, Photographs of contestants may be submitted with the nominations, but a
final decision will not be made by
the judges untill they have seen and
investigated the leading candidates.
To be eligible fornomination to
must not be under four or over furteen years of agé. The dog must be
his own or that of hsi immediate
family. The age. size, color or bread
of the dog are secondary importance.
In inaugurating the boy-dog search
L. J. Brosemer, director of the
Foundation, stated:
“Character building in the young
THE NEVADA: CITY NUGGET, CALIFORNIA
is one of the great problems of thel.
times. The Foundation is convinced
that adog makes a boy a better man
and is encourging every home with
a boy to keep a pure-bred dag. A
recent study of a large penal institution revealed the fact that less than
Oe percent of its inmates had a pet
to play with in their formative years.
Through the boy-dog contest, the
Foundation hopes to catch the spirit
of this comandership and perpetuate
it-in some tangible form for this and
future generations.’”’

CAUTION ADVISED
IN CLOSING DOORS
Slaming an automobile door when
the glass is up often causes breakage,
cautions the Free Emergency Road
Service of the California State Automobile Association. If the glass is
fully closed or fully opened there is
chance of it breaking when the door
is shut with excessive force.
