& Congress, especially the New Deal
membership, is a trifle embarassed.
Nine hundred ragged hunger marchays ago. Congress remembers when
a somewhat larger army of-veterans
marched into Washington and camp-ed during the Hoover administration, and all the embarrassment that
event entailed. Millions of employed
scattered through the country can
pe ignored, or at least treated abstractly, but a few hundreds marchring on Washington remind Congress
_of historical precedents. There was
for instance the bread demanding
mob-of Paris, that initiated
the]
French Revolution. It is extremely
painful to the New Dealers to be reminded by 900 personal witnesses
that the New Deal has not yet lived
up to its high pretensions and to see
these hunger marchers camped on
their doorstep as was that. other
army in Hoover’s time.
