CCC BOYS CUT FOPEST FIRES 10 ~ LOW MINIMUM (By C. J. EVERETT) Early in 1933, shortly after President Roosevelt affixed his signature to the document which marked the inception of the Civilian Conservation Corps, providing a new outlet for a bewildered youth of this nation, over two hundred youths recruited from the many sections of California entered the scented forests of Ponderosa pine which blanket the California foothills leading to the snowy grandeur of the high Sierras, and here began as did the. boys of to:: "dis in.” 17, for a determined fight against depression. and for the attainment of a firm foothold in the present economic structure. i These youths, ranging in age from 17 to 28, and comprising what was to-be known as Company 914 ccc Camp Bradley, F-207, came under the: technical supervision of the U. Here, competent est ‘service supervision, the rapidly learned to wield axes, whose under forboys saws, pulaskis, jack-hammers, and bull. dozers. Soon the forest’ was’ humming with busy activity as these determined youths built fire trails, truck trails, fire breaks, and telephone lines, which are adding mijllions yearly to the value of this, one of the nation’s most sources. Here, where once the hardy miner of ’49 panned the roaring American river as it rushed through its thousand foot canyon, today an equally bronzed son lays an airline’ so that a road might be hewed from the titaniec grandeur of its rock walls, making accessible to all the hidden beauties of this Picturesque backcountry. valuable reThe clicking of the gold’ coach} wheels as they rolled down the old} Placerville. Moving to 1934 and the following summer to Tahoe Grass Valley. in Ukiah for the fire season, the men of this. company have-done isplendid work in minimizing the fire hazard through intelligent fire suppression work, Few ‘serious fires have occurred in the last three years, for many small fires have been detected and with negligible damage. This very valuable work by the CCC men has insured a stand of fine timber for future generations and at the same time preserved the scenie ruggedness of — California’s hinterland, which is noted for its rapid streams, monumental grandeur, and the green and multicolored panorama of its virgin forests and many colored mountain flowers. During their stay with the Civiljan. Conservation Corps, its members have acquired many useful and gainful trades, financial security, a hew concept of responsibility, a feeling of loyalty, civic consciousness, and closeness to the governmeént.° Theirs is indeed a task well done.
