Trail area on the Tahoe national . forest, Figures for this week ‘'as com-' pared with the same week a year ago! show a marked increase and upward: trend in the popuarity of skiing. . There are two reasons why skiing interest is so marked this year. First there is still a fine snow pack in the Summit-area, with over ten feet onj many of the best ski slopes; another . reason is the fact that many more . people have become interested in skiing. are Do skiers form habits? Wel). . cording to some of the old timers. . the skier is just an ordinary individual like you and I and subiect to: habit forming. Those who have spent. some time at this sport seem to’ adovt one or two ski hills for all time. Like clock work, they return to the same hill time after time. Out of some eight or ten trips to the Donner area, about 80 per cent of the time seems to be spent at one or. two yet slopes. The other 20 per). cent of the time will be taken up with trips to other snow sport areas like Yosemite of Mt. Shasta. An event takes place at the Sugar ‘Bow! this soming Sunday, April 21, which does not happen often in California. A gigantic slalom is to be run by probably the best collection of skiiers to be found in the United States. The entry list looks like the “Who’s Who” of skiing. Hannes Schroll has apparently elected.. to bring the top rank and file of better skiers together for this event. The scene will be on the north face of Mt. Lincoln and the first skier takes the dive off this nearly perpendicular slope promptly at 10 a. m. A few of us who looked over the site for this race a few days ago could think of many other slopes we will have to try before :ackling that one. Better be in the Sugar Bowl early because this event starts on time and we do not often get a chance to see the action this race promises. Ski to the Sugar Bowl Lodge, then go one-half mile south into the Sugar Bowl proper, directly under Mt. Lincoln. From the finish you can see almost every foot of the course. Reeommended ‘snow; -Get—in--wel-—before-dark~as~it {all kinds of trouble, lost in the Donner. Trail area. country with a broken leg. It may highly to:see the best:in skiing. But’ don’t rush up and try this course yourself unless you-are* tops at the sport. The National Ski Patrol] . will be there—just in case. But they won’t be looking for you: Mr. .Beginer. What is ‘safe for Hanes Schroll is not for you. -To you who have already put the skis away for the summer, we suggest you may have been a wee bit early. The finest skiing of all the season is with us now if you know how and where to find it. Most people don’t. If you really ‘want skiing, try the north slope, high up. Plan your trip to take advantage of early morning skiing between 7 and 11 o’clock. Take it easy during the hot noon hours and do some more skiing between 4 and 6 p. m. Wax for corn gets mighty cold yet above 7000 when the sun ‘goes down. Skiers can give the forestry boys asbig boost if they only will. Almost every week reports come in of skiers being lost. If one of your party becomes lost or fails to show up at the appointed meeting place, you should by. all means report immediately ‘to the nearest ranger station, Let the ranger decide whether search is necessary or not. (He knows every foot of the country and knows what lost skiers are-apt to do. But a lot of people are getting lost and causing Almost every week this/season someone has been In every case but that ‘of Hans Weissing the missing party has been found quickly. The rub comes in ‘that the lost skiers were usually found to have gone home without notifying others in the party or keeping appointments to meet at the highway. Always when someone is reported lost, there is the grave thought that the skier may be out in the back take 30 telephone calls to track all sources of information and the organization for an all night hunt must get under way on the theory that the skier is really lost. To find that the skier has created a nasty situation through simple carelessness certainly knocks the props from under the . chances for volunteer help for the next -searching party. If there is a code of good ski manners, certainly we should all live up to the simple rule of getting in before dark or notifying others in the party of any change in plans. If you were really hurt and lying out on the snow at night you would certainly want to pee } @ Do you have what the psychologists are prone to call an “encyclopedic mind”? Try this quiz and find out.
