NATIONAL COFFEE SHOP — LEGAL NOTICES Hemely girls are always glad that NEXT MONDAY'S ELECTION, WHE ELECTORATE of Nevada City has an important duty to perform next Monday, that of electing. three persons to places on the muncipal governing board of ofr fair “city. There are seven candidates, some of them on the-ballot . by their own volition and eager to serve to the best of their ability. It resolves itself into-putting on the board three men . who are willing and eager to accept the responsibility of handling the city’s business at all times. Those men who are entering into the spirit of the campaign and advertising the . fact to the voters that they are eager to win a place, are entitled to the thanks of the voters, because at times in the past it has been necessazy to draft citizens to fill out a ticket. That of itself is an unhealthy sign and it is a fortunate symptom that this condition does not obtain this year. UNNING A.CITY government is not the easiest thing in the world, in fact, it usually the one job whereon the hol. . der is the recipient of various and sundry kicks and grow. ‘jings for what is done as well as.what isn’t done during the term of office. It requires a lot of fortitude and patiénce to listen to the complaints of the curbstoners. Complaining is the . easiest thing in life apparently and public officials seem to be . the most popular targets. There is a lot of mental compensation, however, in the thought that a person is doing his civic duty and in this lies the reason for certain of our citizens . being willing to offer themselves for the post of trustee. NOMPENSATION FOR'THE TRUSTEES is an important . thine for the voters to consider in all its aspects. The fact t hat it means an outgo of $600 per year in addition to the other running expenses of the city, is beside the point in its larger aspect. There isn’t a person in Nevada City who would think of asking any one to: work for absolutely wothing on a private piece of work and yet a city trustee has 80 fay in this _city in all its years been asked to work four years for‘nothing and endure a lot of complaining and sometimes abuse in adINVITES YOU TO” Forget NOTICE TO BIDDERS your worries and come and eat here. First Publication—March 19, 1928 eos F 3 . t conviction. The present indications are not confined to Nevdition. Nevada City is possibly behind the times in keeping her city trustees on a donation basis. This is one of the very few cities of its size in thé state today that is still clinging to the old fashioned idea of donation service. Grass Valley is paying $10 a month, and every other incorporated city hereabouts that is up and doing, is paying its city servants. It is freely predicted on the streets that the idea of paying the trustees anything is going to get an awful swat at the polls, for fear that the tax rate wil! get a large boost. The Nugget cannot subscribe to the latter idea. If a few cents extra on ‘other uptodate muncipalities, this paper is more than willing ‘to pay its prorata and demand the highest type of public ser‘vice in return. Every taxpayer this year is paying 20c in his tax budget for a swimming pool that hasn't progressed beyond the stage of selling the interest bearing bonds and yet there hasn’t been an unusual amount of howling over the matter. : The trifling amount to pay the trustees would be but a few cents on the hundred dollars even if it were necessary to raise the rate and that hasn't been shown yet as a necessity. The salaries that are paid here are niggardly, to use the blunt truth. We cannot ask or expect the highest type of service if we are to continue in that manner. The matter will have to be taken up at some future time if not now. Shall we place ourselves in the front rank of progressive municipalities or shall we hang back on past history? Don’t look on this paper as money if we want the gocd things of lfie, and that applies to city trustees’ salaries as well as to the things we eat and the clothes we wear. The movement to pay city trustees a modest , backward one. It has our hearty commendation and our vote. There is every indication of activity on a scale that will . dwarf previous operations before the year passes.
