Mr. Roosevelt's contribution to the future of American youth is the great American debt, says the Chicago Tribune. He has a great deal of scorn for what he calls panaceas. One of these quack remedies, so regarded by him, was the sound money theory proposed, for example, by the Democratic platform on which he ran. That has now become Swamp Root Bitters with bear oil. Mr. Roosevelt encouraged the American youth to look for the more abundant life, cultural opportunities, sufficient subsistence with ease, leisure, and recreation facilities in the greatest debt the United States has ever had. In. paying Mr. Roosevelt's bills future generations are to find happiness and richer opportunities than the American people ever knew before. Mr. Roosevelt offers the American youth debt and the duty of paying it. He offers them opportunities restricted, if not obliterated, by interference with every private activity and enterprise which might otherwise give them a chance to make a living and enjoy their maturity. He has tied American youth to the ball and chain. ANCIENT ROME FOUND WAY OUT OF DEPRESSIONS LOS ANGELES, April 27.—Can modern Amerfea find a solution of its economic problems in. the methods of ancient Greece and Rome? In a late copy of the Daily Conxgressional Record one congressman, Walter M. Pierce of Oregon, assures members of Congress that a possible way toward recovery can be found in the proper study of Caesarian ana other Roman legislation. His remarks were based almost entirely on a memorandum prepared by-Dr. Arthur Patch McKinlay, professor of Latin on the-Los Angeles campus of the University -of California, whose Memorandum on Economie Crises in Greece and Rome of some 700 words is printed in the Congressicnal Record for March 27. Legislation of Solon at Athens ana . . the Licinian laws of Rome in the fourth ‘century B .C. and the financial legislation of Caesar in 48 B. tc. followin the finaricial crisis almost identical to those characteristic of the depression years in the United States. According to Dr. McKinlay’s memorandum, “The Licinian laws . provided that the principal of a loan should be reduced by the interest that had been already paid. A’ commission of five was appointed to liquidate the mass of outstanding accounts. They also: paid up creditors with ther goods of debtors but they took care that such goods should be taken ot a fair evaluation.
