, Mac Rodsevelt’s Gift to Youth .
Mr. Roosevelt's contribution to the future of American
youth is the great American debt, says the Chicago Tribune.
He has a great deal of scorn for what he calls panaceas.
One of these quack remedies, so regarded by him, was the
sound money theory proposed, for example, by the Democratic platform on which he ran. That has now become Swamp
Root Bitters with bear oil.
Mr. Roosevelt encouraged the American youth to look
for the more abundant life, cultural opportunities, sufficient
subsistence with ease, leisure, and recreation facilities in the
greatest debt the United States has ever had. In. paying Mr.
Roosevelt's bills future generations are to find happiness and
richer opportunities than the American people ever knew
before.
Mr. Roosevelt offers the American youth debt and the
duty of paying it. He offers them opportunities restricted, if
not obliterated, by interference with every private activity
and enterprise which might otherwise give them a chance to
make a living and enjoy their maturity. He has tied American
youth to the ball and chain.
ANCIENT ROME
FOUND WAY OUT
OF DEPRESSIONS
LOS ANGELES, April 27.—Can
modern Amerfea find a solution of
its economic problems in. the methods of ancient Greece and Rome?
In a late copy of the Daily Conxgressional Record one congressman,
Walter M. Pierce of Oregon, assures
members of Congress that a possible
way toward recovery can be found
in the proper study of Caesarian ana
other Roman legislation. His remarks were based almost entirely
on a memorandum prepared by-Dr.
Arthur Patch McKinlay, professor
of Latin on the-Los Angeles campus
of the University -of California,
whose Memorandum on Economie
Crises in Greece and Rome of some
700 words is printed in the Congressicnal Record for March 27.

followin the finaricial crisis almost
identical to those characteristic of
the depression years in the United
States. According to Dr. McKinlay’s
memorandum, “The Licinian laws .
provided that the principal of a loan
should be reduced by the interest
that had been already paid. A’ commission of five was appointed to
liquidate the mass of outstanding
accounts. They also: paid up creditors
with ther goods of debtors but they
took care that such goods should be
taken ot a fair evaluation. Caesar,
in_his regulation of finances, allowed interest already paid to count

If folks on farm, ranch and orchard turned to their fe/ephone only in emergencies—to call the doctor, the veterinarian, oi farm va ora neighbor when threatened
with fire or other disaster — it still would be worth far
more than it costs. But telephone usefulness is greater
than this. The handy instrument does hundreds of important jobs. It wah Ba to town and countryside whenever there’s an errand to be performed. Every farm, orchard and ranch needs this service.

MORE CAMP FIRE GIRLS
/ EXPECTED THIS YEAR
A large group of Camp Fire exeeutives' and assistants of the bay)
district visited Piedmont, or Cam» .
Augusta, on .Lake Vera during the
week end. A party of eight visited
the Cakland, of Camp, Celio, lodge
on Lake Vera north of Nevada City
over the past week end. Miss Gladys
Snyder, Oakland, and. several representatives from northern California
attended, one coming from Humboldt. county.
A number of improvements are
planned at the camps, among them .
being new larger water tanks for}
Piedmont and Oakland camps. So!
bopular have the camps grown that
it is expected there will be many
mere-than last year when 1,000 girls
enjoyed their vacation in the beautiful lodges on the lake shore.
against the principal. To force money
into circulation he allowed<no one
to hold more than $2,400 in cash.
Caesar did this In eleven days.
“Tt should also be noted that all
iHese solutions of social bankruptcies were followed, whether-in consequence or not, by. long periods of
great social prosperity. If it had: not
been for Solon’s reforms, the Athenian democracy with its 100 years of
transcendant glory could not have
been. The 150 years following the
Licinian legislation was the great
period of the Roman Republic, just
as the 200 years subsequent to
Caesar were the most prosperous ot
the Roman Empire.’’

GOOD SERVICE COSTS NO MORE
A modern establishment—a trained, intelligent and courteous
personnel — distinctive motor equipment. and other evidences of
progress and prosperity are NOT an indication that funeral service
charges will-be high. A successful concern can be built only by serving honestly and well, at prices that are fair and reasonable.
