BLACK AND WHITE
Did the God who made the Negro
On that very self game day,
leon form a little white child
. From a bit of lighter clay?
“Did he place the two tefore him,
Call one good, the other bad»
And deciare he’d never, never
Make anot her dark hued lad?
Did the God who made the Negro
Break the model then and there?
‘No, he gave it life and spirit,
And a crown of kinky hair.
Gave it eyes with dreams enkindled,
Hands to teil with, feet to run
And a body deeply tinted
By the warm rays of the sun.
Then he made a million Negroes—
Stout and lean ones, short and tall,
And to them he gave a homeland,
Large enough for one and all.
In their hearts he planted laughter,
Touched their lips with gifts of song,
And he told them to be happy, .
* Brave, fun loving, free and strong.
Did ‘the God who mad@ the Negroes
Watch the cruel years unfold—
See his joyous care free, children
Bound and burdened, bought and sold?
Did he know their homesick yearnings,
See their eyes with tears made dim,
Did he heed their cries for mercy
When their prayers came up to him?
These are thoughts that vex the white man,
When the nights are dark and long
And his restless mind is haunted
By the ghosts of ancient wrong;
When the sins, long since recorded,
Reaching down from sire to son, :
Clutch his heart with strange foreboding
Till the hours of night are done.
Can we build a worthy future,
Ruled by justice, peace and right,
With a low road for the Dlack man
i And a high road for. the white?
No, in this fair land.of promise,
Under freedom’s glowing sun, (
‘Black and white must toil together
One for all and all for one.—A (Merriam Conner.

of damming the ditch of the Nevada
Irrigation District which feeds into
the Grass Valley city reservoir.
Their engineering experiment took
place/on the ditch just below Town

A Glenwood resident who lives
near. the ditch noticed a
mere trickle was running where
usually there. was a big bodied flow.
He followed up stream until he came
to the dam, built of logs and stones
gf a size a stout youngster could
carry. He tore the obstruction away
and notified the officials of the NID
Probation Officer A. W. McGagin
‘was then called in and ‘he gave the
two boys a lecture on what. might
have happened ifthe dam had not
been discovered before
overflowed.
