OLD AGE AID, UP
TO COUNTIES
Help for Cie tend local taxpayer, as
voted by legislature last month, is
in'danger of being lost, according to
statement issued today by the California State Chamber of Commerce.
Although $6,000,000 was voted to
help counties meet ‘old age _ costs,
only about $3,000,000 will be reflected in local tax bills, it was pointed out. 23,000 additional old peorle coming under this relief will absorb at least half of the amount
granted thie counties by the legislature.
Whether or not the $3,000,000
estimated saving will be an actual
saving, the state chamber warned,
depends entirely on whether the reductions are allowed to:stand or new
obligations-assumed to replace them.
It was’estimated that the old age
aid costs for 1937-1939 would
amount to over $38,000,000. and for
the year 1938-1939, to over $49,000,000. In spite of this rise, the
counties’ share of these costs will
be reduced from $10,000,000 to $7,.
000,000.
Taxpayers in every county were
asked by the State Chamber to support their county boards of supervisors in seeing that no new expenditures were made, to dissipate this
saving.
