It looks as though the Colfax road
is going to have hard sledding, and
iristead of its being completed by
next fall it is more than likely that
a readjustment of land value assessments along the sproposed route, or
rather in that road district, will have
to be made and the entire proceedings, including publication, gone
through again; all because the Empre-Star Company officials claim }
that they did not read the proposal
until too late to-appear in opposition
to it.The road district embraces both
the Empire and the Idaho Maryland
properties and these companies’ -.contention is' that they are assessed, As
far as acreage is concerned, at least
ten times what the agricultural owners are. That they are also unfortunately within the Irrigation District and that-in the event of foreclosure on account of the critical conGition in which the Nevada Irrigation District now finds itself, they—
having mine workings and improvemets on their lands—will probably
have to bear the full burden of the
bond issue, which will perhaps be
in the neighborhood of $10,000. The mining companies assert that}
they are perfectly willing to shoulder their share of the expense of improving the road, but not to the
extent proposod under the bond
issue.
’ In ease bids ar éreceived and
the district attempts to go ahead
with the building of the road without
consideration of the recent protest
of the Empire-Star Company, that
company insists it wilk enjoin the
authorities and if necessary carry the
case up to the supreme court in order to prevent the road being completed.
In th emeantime we suppose we
must continue to navigate that tenMile stretch of corrugated misery,
which is at this time a disgrace to
the county. A machine gets more
wrenching ,pounding and abuse in
. the ten miles betwee Grass Valley
ad Bear River than it would in 2000
miles of ordinary driving, and when
a driver finishes this trip he feels
like taking off his hat to any manmade machine that: can stand up
against this hammering and still retain its bolts and nuts. i
Let us hope that some amicable
agreement between our Board of Supervisors an dthe mining companies
can soon be made which will be satisfactory to both, because we need—
indeed, we must have—a better road
to Colfax.
Governor Rolph, Mayor Rossi of
‘lake, provided the
distance to be about half filled, but
Division Superintendent Herbert
Cooper says he believes there will
be run of water sufficient to fill the
usual = spring
rains no not fail us.
‘For a long time the Séuthern Pacific abandoned the outside tracks
at Cape Horn, above Colfax.
When the line was double-trackeda tunnel was carried through the hill
below the clig, but it shortened the
distance and consequently made the
grade steeper so that the heavy
freights had difficulty in ‘pulling
through. ‘
The railroad company has been at
work for some time placing a massive concrete retaining wall along
the precipitious bluff and outbound
passengers can onc eagain view the
rugged canyon of the American and
the tiny-lookig suspension pridge of
the Iowa Hill road which spans it
far below. ¢
Yes, Reno and Washoe County are
doing very well, thank you, under
Nevada’e new gambling law.
So far 96 licenses have been issued, the Bank-Palace Club paying
the largest fee of $1875. A total
of about $6000 has been paid into
the county treasury to date and with
the expected influx of divorcees who
ean take the “‘cure’’ now in six
weeks instead of three months, the
outlook for a busy season is quite
rosy.
