Vierling Kersey, state superintendend of public instruction.
This reduction, which represents
29.2 per cent of the state’s contribution, is contained in tlie governor’s 1933-35 budget.
A report just issued by the state
department of education and covering the biennium ending June 30,
1932 reveals that free textbook purchases for elementary schools in Nevada county totaled $1,231.
STATE PRINTING OFFICE
_ Kersey said the proposed economy
would not only ‘further deplete the
tools of education of which California has never had a complete set,
but will mean a slash in personnel
of the state printing office.” :
“This slash in text book funds,’”’:
Kersey emphasized, ‘‘cannot help but

UNSANITARY BOOKS
Kersey pointed out that the life of
the ordinary textbook was not more . .
than four years. He said condition
of thousands of books now used is
unsanitary and dog-eared.
Half of the cost of furnishing free
text books to elementary schools has
been borne. by the local school districts, the school superintendent
said.
The proposed reduction will be
opposed by organized labor, parent
teachers associations and educational
authorities, the official said. He added they were “concerned over this
new threat to reduce educational efment in the state printing plant.”
“Expense for textbooks for the
784,293 pupils in elementary schools
during the current biennium amounts
to but 65 cents annually per pupil,”
Kersey said. “The Proposed reduction would slash this by 20 cents.”
