The present owners named it the “San Juan’’ mine but old timers can never think of calling it anything but the ‘Boss.”’ shrubbery and forestry past feilds of blue lupins, golden poppies, the lateither side, It was surely an entrancing picture!—Sweetland and the surrounding country was always one of our beauty spots. Then the day was o pleasantly spent at the home of the manager, Mr. Lyser and his charming wife. Association with these splendid people is surely good for the soul. Long may they continue with us, and their good works prosper, for we truly believe the ‘“‘Boss Mine” holds a future for the San Juan back to one Sunday afternoon in girlhood days, when in company with a school chum and the late J. D. Morris of Sebastopol, we took a walk to John Armstrong’s ranch to get some . grapes. Little did any of us think ‘that some day the ranch would be known as a mine. Good honest, kindhearted old John. He was very proud oi his ranch and delighted to show us his orchard and fine vineyard and the maple trees he had sent from the East., We will relate a rather humorous incident that i# only an index to the character of this rugged and seemingly uncouth old Scotchman: One night some of the boys went out to John’s ranch and as they approached the house they heard some one crying and when they came in found poor old John weeping very bitterly; When asked the cause of his grief, he replied ‘‘Drat the old Jennie, evening, I was obliged to whip her. He had made a long and hard struggle for a return to health, and a true and faithful friend has been lost, when that heart was stilled forever. He-was native of Grass Valley, where the family fully looked forward to regaining his strength sufficient to return to the old home place, and never knew that the old home was reduced to ashes about two weeks before he passed away.
