2.T HAILER CLAIMS. .
_ NEAR DOWNIEVILLE
Another rich ledge was uncovered this week near Downieville when.
Joe Hull and his partner, H. E. Kitch!
a large bunch of high grade on the
Hailer Claims last Saturday.
They first became interested
the claims severa] years ago when
they were working on the road and:
found a piece of the highgrade. which
had ap arently fallen off the ledge
onto the road. He has been waiting
for the opportunity to go into its
‘tronger and it came this past week
when he was able to-get-a grubstake
to develov the claim. He’!s overating
under a lease and option from Geo.
and Ralph.,Costa of Downieville.
This is only-one of the many
“trikes that have been made in the
“ownieville section this past season
bv miners in that region.
The ledge that is being worked by
Hull and his partner varies in width
from ten to fifteen feet. It has been
traced up on the’ hillside for a distanee of several hundred feet. It has
also been found across the. river a
distance of several hundred yards:
It is believed that nearly $200 has
been taken out in -two days work.
Hull reported that he was up on the
claim last Thursday for a short time
and that he was able to take out several small pieces from the ledge. He
has been unable to work during the
week due to the heavy storms. He
says that he will get into the claims
again as soon as the storms are
over.

BUSINESS ACTIVITY
HIGHER THAN LAST
According to the local ‘branch of
Bank of America, business activity
in California and the far west was
maintained at levels higher than a
_year-ago,—although there was a de-j_
cline from the showing of more recent months.
Exceptions to the decline were the
bank debits and department store
sales, according to the current review preparéd by the bank’s analy-isis and research department.
California cities enjoyed an average gain in bank debits of 2.1 per
cent over January and 9 per cent
over February, 1939. Department
store sales averaged about 1 per cent
above January and two per cent better than February of last year., Comparisons are based on daily average
figures adjusted for seasonal variations.
Building activity in California’s
in several years. Thirty two cities
883, eight per cent over January ‘and
19 per cent over February, 1939.
It was disclosed that about 60 per
cent of the value of all building perresidential construction. Total ‘for
February was $8,508,400, seven per
per cent below January.
The local management advised
that Bank of America’s index of the
western business for February stood
at 77.9 down 1.5 per cent from January but 6.9 per cent over February,
1939, and with the exception of 1937
since 1931.
While crowned roads are not so
common as they once were, experts
still encourage the practice of. shifting the tires from one wheel to another, reports L. G: Evans, general
service manager of the National Automobile Club. They believe this
practice will increase tire life.
