Joe Hull and his partner, H. E. Kitch! a large bunch of high grade on the Hailer Claims last Saturday. They first became interested the claims severa] years ago when they were working on the road and: found a piece of the highgrade. which had ap arently fallen off the ledge onto the road. He has been waiting for the opportunity to go into its ‘tronger and it came this past week when he was able to-get-a grubstake to develov the claim. This is only-one of the many “trikes that have been made in the “ownieville section this past season bv miners in that region. The ledge that is being worked by Hull and his partner varies in width from ten to fifteen feet. It has been traced up on the’ hillside for a distanee of several hundred feet. It has also been found across the. river a distance of several hundred yards: It is believed that nearly $200 has been taken out in -two days work. Hull reported that he was up on the claim last Thursday for a short time and that he was able to take out several small pieces from the ledge. He has been unable to work during the week due to the heavy storms. He says that he will get into the claims again as soon as the storms are over. in BUSINESS ACTIVITY HIGHER THAN LAST According to the local ‘branch of Bank of America, business activity in California and the far west was maintained at levels higher than a _year-ago,—although there was a de-j_ cline from the showing of more recent months. Exceptions to the decline were the bank debits and department store sales, according to the current review preparéd by the bank’s analy-isis and research department. California cities enjoyed an average gain in bank debits of 2.1 per cent over January and 9 per cent over February, 1939. Department store sales averaged about 1 per cent above January and two per cent better than February of last year., Comparisons are based on daily average figures adjusted for seasonal variations. Building activity in California’s in several years. Thirty two cities 883, eight per cent over January ‘and 19 per cent over February, 1939. It was disclosed that about 60 per cent of the value of all building perresidential construction. Total ‘for February was $8,508,400, seven per per cent below January. The local management advised that Bank of America’s index of the western business for February stood at 77.9 down 1.5 per cent from January but 6.9 per cent over February, 1939, and with the exception of 1937 since 1931. While crowned roads are not so common as they once were, experts still encourage the practice of. shifting the tires from one wheel to another, reports L.
