NEVADA CITY ad NUGGET PAGE THREE FEES OF STATE TOTAL $4,123,147 SACRAMENTO, April fornia’s -first collection’ of an operating fee, in lieu of city and county on motor 23,142.27 taxes $4,1 personal property vehicles, brought in in January, the first month in whieh J. the new statute was effective. This announcement? was made today following a report to Governor Frank ©. Merriam by Ray Ingels, director of motor vehicles, on whom the legislature placed the taskof setting up the new vehicle license fee system and the subsequent work of collecting the levy. “Of the total vehicle fee ‘collected by the department of motor vehicles explained Ingels, “37% per cent will be paid to cities and counties, one per cent will be allotted to the department for expense in col. lection and the.remainder . will be retained by the state. Twenty-five per cent of the money paid to cities and counties must.be used for: law enforcement, regulation, control and fire protection of highway traffic. Money retained by the state will go toward retirement of certain highway bonds. Funds will be prorated quarterly and cities and counties will receive their shares according to population, on a basis of the last federal census’.’ The average vehicle license fee, which is collected at the ‘rate of $1.75 per'$100 valuation as determined by department of motor vehicles a,mounted to $3.414 for the entire state. Variations of the average such as $4.048 collected in San Francisco, $3.488 in Oakland, .$3.399 in Los Angeles, $3.391 in San Diego, $3.293.in Long Beach, $3.139. in Sacramento and $2,823 in Fresno indicate the valuations of motor vehicles in the respective areas. Los Angeles office of department of motor vehicles ranked first in collection of vehicle license fees, taking in $1,739,168.53 in January. Other branch offices collected fees as follows: San Francisco, $664,701.96; Oakland, $349,482:20; San Diego, $231,525.98; Long Beach, $211,685.83; Fresno, $166,446.88. The main office in Sacramento which handles mail for the entire state collected $760,120.89, according to Ingels’ report. NUGGET ADS PAY 2.—Cali-. ° POST WITH MIDDLE FORK Mr. Elliott Syms, of Nevada City, is now foreman with the Middle Forks Gold Mining company, located near Cool in ‘the American River Canyon. It is 20 miles by road east of Auburn. Mr. Syms who has been in the employ of the Cooley Butler interests in Grass Valley, for some time, left--April first for his new work. Ledges on the property are wide, the one being mined_is about 50 feet in width and special milling methods are required to treat the ore. About 50 men are employed. Syms is the son of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Syms of Nevada City. Mrs. Elliott "Syms who is visiting in Kingman, Ariz., will return in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Syms will live in a nice cottage on the property. ARRESTED AND FINED Walter Harris, was arrested at the state camp at the southern limits of Nevada City by Sheriff Carl J. Tobiassen Thursday night on ‘a charge of indecent exposure. He plead euilty in Judge Mobley’s court Saturday and was given a $50 fine or 25 days in the county jail. Sentence was suspended provided Hughes returned to camp and remained there, otherwise he is to be imprisoned for the 25 days and sent: out of the county at the end of his term of confinement. Mr. and Mrs. Stuart F. Leete of San Francisco were guests of his father H. M. Leete and Mrs. Leete over the week end. NOTICE. The company has taken options and leases on a royalty basis Delaware, on eight important mining properties in the three counties, well known in mining circles; also all water rights and ditches. In Nevada county the deal for properties covers the San Juan Gold Mining Company, and Esperence Mining Company. A clause in the options provides that a payment of. $100,090 shall be made for the options and specifies also that jf within two years the proposed government dam at the Smartsville Narrows is not built the company must itself erect a debris dam to hold the tailings from entering-the river. French Corral, North San Juan, Bridgeport. and. Birchville are mentioned as the sites of the claims in the deal. Mrs. A. BE. Langley of Los Angeles holds the option on the Esperence Mining ground and it is reported she has given a lease to Mr. P. A. English of Beverley Hills. It is also reported English made a fortune in mining gypsum in Death Valley several years ago. The Esperence Gold Mine is composed of over 200 acres, 70 acres being good placer ground. Mr. C. M. Austin was in charge of eight men who-were working on the! Esperence which has been a rich hydraulic property in the past. Officers of the River Mines company are L, §&. Fowler, president; Thomas Stokes, secretary, with head offices at Room 2000, No. 37 Walt Street, New York. Within the last. few days about #0 men-have been employed by the company yoperating the Esperenice mine. Machinery is being brought to the property which is located near French Corral. A gas shovel and trommel have been installed. Mr. C. Austin is directing the work.
