‘“ENGLE AND ENGEL
WASHINGTON, D. C.: There are
two Engles in congress.. The other
one is Albert J. Engel, of Michigan.
We get each other’s mail, telegrams
and phone calls. Fortunately, Engel
of Michigan is one the best known
legislators in the congress. From
time to time I have received coman editorial in regard to his activitin connection with cutting waste in
the war and navy departments. He
thas become quite a specialist on zZovernment fiscal matters. On one occasion a Sacrmento newspaper ran
an editorial in egard to his activities which many people thought referred to me. However, the confusion-has it’s difficulties. Drew._Pearson had an item in his column in
regard to what happened out in
Guam. The military and naval commanders thought they were ‘being
visited by the Congressman Engel
who had just made a speech advocating cutting tleir budget—and until
the matter was straightened out I
got a pretty cool reception. The
other day Fred Othman of the United Press wrote a column in regard
to a speech made by Knutson, in
which Knutson denounced the alleged tax experts “Dingell,
Gore.”” Knutson wes talking about
Rep, Engle of Michigan, who .voted
against his bill and had a resounding split with the Republican tleadership over their tax policies. I votunfortunately the corrections rarely
catch up with the misinformation.
