Stéwart of Auburn, a considerable debt of gratitude for the unselfish, whole hearted fight he has been waging in behalf of the placer mining industry of California for . the past few years. It is to be suspected that the industry has 'yather been leaving it to Jim to bear the financial burden on his shoulders quite largely to acquaint the people of the state ‘with the facts surrounding the resumption of placer mining once more. The opponents of the plan who seem centered largely in the area about Marysville and Yuba City due to the influence of a few vote getting politicians have grouped the extraction of placer gold under the term “‘hydraulic min— ing” anda bunch of persistent cusses since the days of . 83. it must be admitted, but this doughty mining engineer . has not been subdued by their threats to down every attempt . to revive placer mining in the areas where the mountain . streams drain into the, Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. . He was the leading figure in the fight to see the Cloudman . bill through the state legislature last year from the mining) operators, and in this connection it must be admitted that the /Nevada county placer interests did not give the.movement the support it was entitled to. That is past history, however. Mr. Stewart is carrying the struggle of the placer miners to get established again, direct to’the people and it is probable that this fall will see:the mining measure on the November ballot. On the night of April 19th, the matter will be debated before the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. In past discussions before the Club. the case of the miners has heen ably presented by Ray Elliott, Arthur Jarman, Harold C. Cloudman, J. M. Hill, Walter Bradley and Mr. Stewart. It is unfortunate that Congressman Engelbright cannot be present on the 19th to help present the cause of the miners as he has hoped that a strong showing can be made on this occasion as the Commonwealth Club is one of the recognized influential organizations of the state. NEXT TUESDAY NIGHT there will be a meeting of some consequence in Nevada City. The Chamber of Commerce is having a special Roll Call of its large membership on that ocpouring at that time to assist the officers of the organization in planning the year’s work and set proper objectives to be striven for. It is discouraging to find but a slim attendance at some of the meetings when matters of considerable importance are discussed. The Chamber needs the earnest cooperation of ness in Nevada City. Give it your moral support as well os A ial and h Nevada City P ! nancial and watch Nevada Uity Frogress: WITH THE MUNICIPAL election well uncer way today, it is certain that more interest is being taken by the voters as to who will represent their interests on the board of trustees than has been evident for a number of years. It is a healthy . sign and betokens renewed life and prosperity for our fair city as the trustees can exert 2 considerable influence in the growth and progress of the community.
