AGO FIFTY YEARS AGO NEVADA CITY 75 YEARS AGO A brass and string band was organized to furnish music for political meetings, exercises, balls and parties. The brass band was under the leadership of Phil Goyne and the string band was directed by M. M. Blum. The Union Republican Convention met at the theatre with Judge Niles secretary of the County Central Committee calling the convention to order. Jonathan Clark was elected Dixon and A. H. Parker, H. Harrington were elected sergeant.at arms. The following men were nominated or various offices: For county judge, Judge John Caldwell. for Senator, Chas. Kent, for sheriff, Joseph. Perrin of Grass Valley, for recorder, J. M. Walling, for treasurer, A. GoldMiss Susie Brasfield, Mrs. C. Waite, Mrs. Beatrice Coder, Mr. W. H. Norton, Mr. Asa Coder. The city was shocked and sadder by the murder of Sheriff Dave Douglass while in pursuit of the highWay man who had been molesting travelers on the San Juan, Bloomfield and Washington roads for two weeks. On a report from John Cunya, who had seen fhe bandit on the trail through the old Hirshman digsings, Douglass with Under Sheriff Pascoe the latter’s brother and Cunya set out on.a man hunt buat were unsuecessiful. The following morning early Sunday, Sheriff Douglass with his dog went out alone to get his man. At four o'clock in the afternoon the dog returned to town alone and so stirred the anxiety of the people that a. search party was smith, for district attorney, M. S. Deal, for county clerk, T. C. Plunkett of Truckee. 3 A sore headed candidate of the Republican convention offered the following proposition to anyone:— $1000 that Newton Booth would carry this, county. $200 on each candidate nominated by the Republicans. Following the Republican convention a number of Republicans, hired the Nevada Brass Band and serenaded Hon. A. A. Sargent, Republican nominee for congress from this district. George R. Crawford bought 5000 feet of lumber atEmigrant Gap at $65 per thousand, to be paid if Haight was elected. The current rate at that place was $255 per thousand In accordance with a vote of the district, the school trustees sold the lot and gchool buildings on Nevada. They found Douglass’ body lying in the brush near the juntion of the Bloomfield, Blue Tent roads with two bullets through the back. Lying a few feet distant was the body of the bandit, his head resting on his coat and a rifle in his hand. He was identified by M. L. Marsh as W. L. Davidson a wood cutter employed by the Marsh saw mill since May. It was assumed that Dauglass had come upon the man sleeping, had-tried to take him, the man had resisted and reached for his rile and Douglass had shot him.
