LEDGE LOOKING The big No. 3 tunnel Twin Sister mine which is now in 1000 feet looks to be drawing near to the ledge wall of the rich shoot which was uncovered in the No, 2 tunnel and it is not expected that it will take much distance to cut the ledge which is the objective of the present work. With the ledge reached, a station will be cut and a raise run to connect with the upper workings and preparations made for the extraction of ore as with the large amount of backs opened up there is plenty of ore in sight for steady milling for months to come. Several of the company stockholders were at the property the past week including Mr. Cooks of Los Angeles, Dave Rosasco and family of! plished at the Boreham mine on Healdsburg and Charles Miller Of . Banner Ridge souta of town last Geyserville. week. The shaft which was sunk to a depth of 200 feet was full width in. ore the last (°40 feet and the drift which was cut from that depth could not carry the full width of the ledge. The ore encountered is of the specimen variety and leads to the conclusion that a fine pay. shoot is ahead. The ledge at the’ surface prospects well. The drift runs, west from the shaft toward the adjoining Merrimac ground which showed rich values at the time it was worked. The property is equipped with a two 1250 pound stamp mill. <A concentrator is at present being installed prior to active millin;; operajtions. The site is admirably adapted for operations. The mill will be used during the development work which ‘will be pushed as soon as the milling equipment is ready for use. The property is being developed by the Grass Valley Boreham Gold Mining Company under a lease and bend. A. O. Witte of Los Angeles is president and general manager. The Gold Lead people have had a tunnel going through the Twin Sister ground headed fo their gravel channel. The tunnel work is progressing about 2% feet per day on a_ single shirt. The combination of water

The branch line will be one third of a mile long. GOOD SAYS GRIMES The crossecut tunnel being run at the American Flag mine to intersect a large ledge was. in over 300 feet on Saturday and making good progress, reports James Grimes, one of the owners, who has been at the property for some days on an inspection trip. Since the Ist of July over 60 feet has been run. The ledge should be cut shortly and will give 500 to 600 feet of backs, Work of drifting east an another ledge is shortly to be undertaken. Shaft sinking operations at the The ledges all appear to carry. Gracie mine reached the 300 foo good values and are sulphide ore] jeyel Saturday. A pump station will be cut at this level and sinking will be resumed for another 50 feet, at’which point drifts will be run to open up the fine pay shoot uncoyered on the’ upper levels. IRRIGATION DISTRICT IN LOSS OF COURT DECISION The irrigation district was loser in the sult brought against the Yu ba River Power Company in the su preme court over the waters of the Middle Yuba. But as the Pacific Gas now owns or will, the Yubé River Power, it is hardly to be supposed that it will do much fighting against the district taking the water and putting it over into ‘Lake Spaulding for them as it is doing the other half of the water now being permitted for diversion. BradENGLEBRIGHT VISIONS GREAT MINING HE SECURED LARGE APPROPRIATIONS In an interview granted The Nugget today, Congressman Harry L. Englebright envisioned the return of gold mining in the next few of its early glory from an industrial standpoint, that is, in the point eclipsing anything at present undertaken. Legislation enabling the return of placer mining under proper safeguards enacted within the aoe few years by both state and federal ' governments would be of inestimable help in bringing some of this activity intobeing. . “From what I have learned since my recent return from Washington the past month’’, stated Mr. Englebright, ‘it looks to me as if the gold mining sections of California were in for a real revival of activity that wil bring the industry back to something of its fornier status when it gave employment to many years have been in dire need. ereated should receive of all be accomplished by an effective organization. Yas lines ing prosperity is the very best form Prof gold mined and produced secures inany thousands of hardy men spread yolden prosperity Pacific Coast as no. other industry . has ever done or ever wii! do. Dae] to the marked . interest that nas . been shown in the gold mining in dustry, I. secured in the last Congress an increased appropriation of $130,000 for the geological survey which will be used in mapping the gold regions of California which will prove of inestimiable service to the industry. Another appropriation secured was $30,000 for the printing of literature on the Mother Lode and Alleghany districts and which has been meeting a larve demand from mining capital over the United States. For the Bureau of Mines I secured an appropriation of $125 000 for mineral mining investigations and an additional $20,000. especially for the. study of mining methods and costs of operations which should pruve o7 great deuefit to mining cperators. “These increased appropriations are bound to be very helpful to the gold mining industry in view of the fact that none such have. deen available during tne past 1f or 20 years. The determining of the cost of operations isan entirely new study for the bureau of mines and will open up a large field for research work. These appropriations shows that what has been aceomplished the past. year in bringing to the attention of Congress the needs of the gold mining industry. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on behalf of othe: ‘ines of activity but the mining in dustry has been allowed to languish because no organized effort had been exerted in its behalf in the way of) securing funds for investigations. “What has been . needed in thi: district has been the investment of large capital which can operate on a tremendous scale which is the tren¢ of modern business today. The copper, lead, zine, and iron miners have been carrying on for some years the idea of lage consolidated development. The same thing is now be ing applied to the gold’ mining in dustry. The costs’ of operation: today are such that it requires a large capacity output in order to ana , over the hold down the overhead expense: which very often cause the failure of smaller developments. We now have the start of large developments in Nevada county in the world wide Newmont interests taking over two well known Grass Valley properties. The large developments which have ley in the Washington section are of particular importance’ to this district.
