THE CALIFORNIA NEWSPAPER CENTENNIAL
_ At Monterey on August 15, newspaper publishers and
editors of California will celebrate the 100th anniversary of
an event of great historical significance —. the founding of
California’s first newspaper.
As they published the first issue of their little weekly
. Robert Semple and Walter Colton must have had little notion
of the great train of events they were setting in motion. Had
they been able to grasp the full significance of their act, they
surely would have been proud.
Naturally, the California nswspaper of today bears little
external resemblance to the first issue of the Monterey ‘‘Californian’. But the publishers of 1946 are true spiritual heirs
. to the pioneer editors of 1946. They have inherited the rug_ ged integrity of those pioneers, plus their unshakable faith in
the future of California.—Contributed.

JUST WONDERIN’
I wonder what is really wrong
With this strange world of ours;
It still produces luscious fruit,
Tall trees and radiant flowers;
The skies of spring are softly blue,
The winds of summer bland,
But dire confusion seems to reign
In every land.
A few years ago, we frequently met serene, complacent
people, who smilingly assured us that “‘all’s well with the
laation, for in the world at large, there seemed to be many
things that needed fixing, but we shrank from distudbing the
optimistic outlook of our naive friends, so it was our habit to
smile back at them and keep our dark suspicions to ourselves.
The phrase, “‘all’s well with the world,’ fell into disuse
when the storm of war swept the world and when the war was
over and our dreams began crashing down upon us, it was
still in abeyance but have you noticed how often a startling
bit of news or an oratorical paragraph begins with these words
“never before in the history of the world,” and isn’t it true
that never before in the history of the world, were there so
many new and amazing events, discoveries and inventions
broucht to the attention of the world’s distraught millions.
What is wrong with the world of today? _ I wonder if
anybody knows? Perhaps the general state of disillusionment
is increased by the fact that “never before in the history of the
world,”’ were earths inhabitants so well informed as to prevailing conditions both good and bad.
] wonder if some of the bad conditions are often exaggerated and if in magnifying the evil which lives in the hearts
of men, we do not overlook the good.
The war closed suddenly for the great army of war correspondents columnsits an war minded purveyors of sensationalism. Like Othello, they found their occupation gone, and
so it is that in striving to retain their popularity with the public, they often went out of their way in order to report the
tragedies of life, the bizarre and the soul disturbing. Of course
‘their accounts of life as it is today are in a measure true, the
world is topsy-turvy and the future is veiled in threatening
clouds, but still 1 wish that our news casters would looke about
them and bring to their radio and press reports something of
the. good, constructive and heartening. There is a germ of
good in almost every heart, progressive steps are even now
being taken by men of science and true leaders in domestic
and foreign affairs. Let’s hear more about these steps, a few
of them mingled with accounts of wars, intolerances and strife
would furnish us reason to go on hoping that in due season,
peace may really come to the strife torn nations and give us
surcease of misunderstanding and relief from our long winter
of discontent.—A. Merriam Conner.
