CRAMENTO, Aug. 14.—(UP) the capital bewildered., Latest mock battle was the governor’s charge didate. It looked like curtains. for the finance director. But next morning (after a secret conference) they were affable and friendly. Lovers’ quarrels are more logical than the tiffs between these two executives. Truth is, the governor has heped for months Vandegrift would resign? voluntarily. ‘“‘Van’’ is of Dutch extraction. And with all the stubborness of his race, he’s sitting tight. Nine of the state’s eleven elective officers will seek reelection. Two hope for higher public offices. Only Secretary of State Frank C. Jordan and Attorney General U. S. Webb have formally announced. Remainder have privately told their friends. they’d run. Reelection—State dontedtion Ray Riley ,who’s held his job since 1921; Webb, in office for 31 years; Jordan, for his seventh term; four mem+ bers of the equalization board, Fred Stewart, Richard E. Collins, H. G. Cattell and John C. Corbett; Vierling Kersey, director of education and ,of course, the governor. Lieutentnt Governor Frank F. Merriam is.a candidate for governor. So is State Treasurer Charles Johnson. Neither has announced. But both are busily engaged flying kites. Human frailty was never better demonstrated than in the socalled legislative ‘“‘mileage expose.” Most assemblymen felt they were entitled to mileage expenses at the mid-summer session. But they shied away from openly-,voting themselves funds, Afraid of public reaction, they resorted to subterfuge. A “general expense’ appropriation was crowded through and mileage cheeks quietly drawn therefrom. Inevitably the Blan was exposed. And now the feared adverse reaction has descended on assemblymen, multiplied tenfold. An exasperated public is blaming Governor Rolph for. the sales tax. Go into any store and listen. You’ll hear: ‘‘Here’s a penny for Jimmy’s boots. . . maybe this will buy Rolph an airplane ride. . . tell “Sunny Jim’ to use this penny to buy champagne for visiting’ governors. .-. this is .a ‘Rolph tax.’’’ Stung by criticism, the governor declared he interpreted the RileyStewart tax revision vote as an elecwhy he signed the bill, Actually, the main reason the sales tax has been "i A) PROFESSIONAL CARD. _ A.
