WEEKLY COMMENT Chiletinls Nidibenn Roistering, bullyragging, lumberjacketed he men of the woods have been the subject of many woods stories. The antithesis of this we discovered in a peaceful clearing back of the Hoge mine about 6 miles from Nevada City. Here in a peaceful sunbathed clearing of big pyoportions, we found an up to date ;sawmill with all of -the noises like the zing and the ring of the big blade as it reduced the giant timber monsters to sawdust and siding. There was no roistering, no fighting, just a gang of men doing their job of making lum4 ber piles look tidy and piling the sawdust thigher and ‘higher. When the dinner bell sounded all activity ceased in a repressed duck for the mess hall, but it takes more description than I can command to describe the Arbogast lumber mill at Blue Tent. This sawmill in the woods, is FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1936 — — SPRING HILL MINE Robert Plate, well known minin engineer who has been superintendent of the Spring Hill mine for the past four years has severed his connections with that mine and has left for San Francisco. Mr Plate was associated with C. V. Lakenan, owner: of the Spring Hill property and D. E. McLaughlin, financial head of the enterprise. Milling at the mine has ‘been suspended and the mine will be ‘placed on a pumping and developing basis. Even with labor saving devices such as one sees there. The big circular saw is the most demanding inanimate thing, huge logs are its fodder and as these are reduced to the least common denominators of boards and heavier timbers they must be taken away immediately, the whole procedure is most interesting and the thing which makes it interesting is that it so suddenly looms before you as you are traveling along an obscure mountain road, The big commodious ranchhouse surrounded by ,beautiful flowers, shrubbery and spacious lawn, adds a domestic touch to the picture. x ’ SUMMER— he Outdoor Season Calls for Kodak Films Bring your Negatives to HODSON’S for better and quicker finishing.
