STATEWIDE POLL UNDERTAKEN ON LIQUOR ISSUES Those who recently circulated loeal option petitions here were cooperating today with an army of approximately 2,000 volunteer workers throughout the state, in a houseto-house poll to determine the public’s attitude on the two liquor control measures which will appear on the November ballot. These have been designated as Propositions No. 3 and No. 9. The so-called local option measure . —Proposition No. 9—shattered all previous records for the number. of Signatures obtained by voluntter workers, according to the secretary of state. SINGLE TAXON LAND SIMILAR TO SOVIET ACT SACRAMENTO, Aug. 17.—Drawing a sharp parallel between the tenets of “Single Tax’’ (Land Tax) advocates, and the decree of the Soviet Republic, confiscating private property, John R. Quinn, chairman of the State Veterans’ Welfare Board, today denounced the “Single Tax” Alct on the November ballot—Proposition Number 1—as “‘a deliberate attive of aroused public opinion on the present liquor set up, Local option petitions. containing 200,337 names from all but ‘four counties in the state have been certified. This was nearly 15,000 more names than the 186,378 required to place an initiative measure on the ballot. In a statewide campaign caucus of local option leadérs at Atascadero last Wedtiesday, sponsors of the lo€al option law stressed the fact that, in a strict sense, the proposition is “neither wet nor dry”, but is simply an enabling act, which will give individual cities, towns or counties the power to ‘‘regulate, zone or prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages’, thus breaking the monopoly now held by the board of equalization. Campaign lines were forming this week as the army of volunteer workers received their instructions to carry the house-to-house poll into every precinct in the state. Establishing the parellel: between “Single Tax,” theories and Communistict doctrines, insofar as property rights are concerned, Quinn quoted the principles and purposes of both groups, as follows: Henry George, father of the “Single Tax’’: ‘Private ownership of land is gainst natural justice, no matter by what laws it may be sanctioned. S place Crisis U.-S. Faces Stressed by Knox Vice Presidential Nominee Heartens Throng at Connersville, Ind. start Connersville, Ind.—The gravity of the present situation confronting the American people was pointed out here by Colonel Frank Knox, Republican nominee for Vice-President, in the first major speech of the campaign following his acceptance address in Chicago. “The issues we discuss are grave,’’ Colonel Knox said. ‘The American people have not faced since the Civil War an election with more at stake. We are confronted with problems that go to the very roots of the American economic system.’’ In continuing to stress the ‘“‘crusade,’’ Colonel Knox attacked the New Deal party with the assertion: ‘Whatever the government has been doing about recovery has. been wrong. It has not helped recovery. It has blocked recovery. The Administration has proceeded on the theory that the business man and the farmer must bé told how to run their businesses by some planner in Washington.’’ Vandenberg Urges Fight for Liberty Chicago. — Declaring that the American flag ‘‘is not yet red nor even pink,’’ Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg of Michigan told the Union League Club in an address here that ‘‘it still is the personification of ‘the Constitution; it still is the banner of a free peopie who propose to vote themselves a new emancipation’”’ in November. Asserting that the American people must ‘‘fight for their liberty,”’ Senator Vandenberg charged that the New Deal administration is sponsoring, through Secretary Henry Wallace, an ‘unwritten constitution.’ “If you do not want this ‘unwritten constitution’ this may be your last opportunity to say so,’’ warned Senator Vandenberg. they here sucthe first houThe ? t ’ -— Mr. Edd Addington left early t week for Feather Falls, Butfe county, and where he is engaged in reopening his mining Horseshoe mine. property, Assays from the ore ran quite high and Mr. Addingon feels he has promise of a good producing property, as soon as more development is carried out. his A new roof is being put on the
