Willoughby Editor and Publisher COZY CORNER CHAT ONLY ONE WEEK remains before election. Sample balYots have been mailed to the voters and candidates are making last minute appeals. It remains for the ballots to tell their own stories. : The most important and interesting fight is, of course, that for the governor's chair: Fitts is definitely out of the picture in the mountain counties although he is expected to pole a large vote south of the Tehachapi Pass. The fight in the north is between Governor C. C. Young and Mayor James Rolph. Each one has behind him an excellent record as a public official and each has many adherents. The outcome of the election cannot be foretold as there are many angles to consider. Young’s friends point with pride at the excellent roads built under the able direction of B. B. Meek while his enemies point to the hydraulic bill veto as a direct slap on mining. A lengthy article comes from Sierra County hydraulic miners to show that the $200,000 proposed by the bill was a mere grain of sand compared with the millions needed. So it goes on— . pro and con. Many tales are told on James Rolph, but he has the faculty of making friends and keeping them. Taking over the reins of San Francisco after a political turmoil he has guided the city in a creditable manner and has been returned again and again . until sixteen years are to his credit as mayor of the metropolis of San Francisco. The Editor never goes to Sacramento without hearing the praises of Congressman Harry L. Englebright sung. Now that Hoover has proved that it is possible to elect a president west of the Rockies we may see our Harry ruling over the nation. We are certain he would do it with the same efficiency with which he has represented this district in Congress. Besides he iis a gifted talker and posesses a magnetic personality. Here’s Aoping! With a full program of mining legislation coming up this ‘winter it is most important to send back to the Assembly the aman who has proved himself a friend to the mining industry, J-L. “Jerry” Seawell. MISPLACED EDITORIAL ‘Getting out this paper is no picnic. If we print jokes, people say we are silly—if we don't, they assay we are too serious. if we make a change in the other fellow’’s write-up, we are 60 critical—if we don't, we are asleep. fl we clip things from-other papers, we are too lazy to -write them ourselves—if we do not, we are stuck on our own stuff. If we don’t print contributions, we don't appreciate true genius—if we do print them, the paper is filled with junk. Now, like as not, some one will say we clipped this from a amagazine. ‘We couldn't deny that—WE DID! YE EDITORIAL ~ TROUBLES OF 1865 Here is the chronicle of a far seeing editor right here in Nevada Lity who, 65 years ago advocated in strong language the short dress and he really doesn’t know what to do’. Here is the article of the day previous, which brought about the furious onslaught on the editor: TRAILING SKIRTS A great many articles have been written about the expense of trailing skirts. Much also has been said about the filthiness of allowing a robe to drag over the dirty streets and sidewalks but with, to some persons, little effect. It is no wonder however that expense and filth are no reasons for discarding dragging skirts with some, if what one of her sex tells us is true. * She informs us confidentially that there are good reasons why some persons wear trailing skirts, and when you see that kind of a dress on the streets, it is safe to say they cover large feet, dirty. linen, or-both It would appear then that ladies with pretty feet and unimpeachable underclothes have no motive to wear mop skirts, but only those who have something~™ objectionable to cover up. Boys, take note of this and be governed accordingly’. ~ of our girls of today and as a conwequence got himself into trouble. Read what the Nevada City Gamette, published by E. F. Bean in 1865 has to say about it: “Our item of yesterday about frailing skirts has produced a burst of indignation.
