V. F. W. MAINTAINS
HOME FOR ORPHANS
One of the outstanding achieve:
ments of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars of the United States: during iis
40-year history is the establishment
of the V. F. W. National Home at
Eaton Rapids, Mich. ~~
Founded in 1925,
National Home today houses = approximately 200 sons and daughters
of American war veteran. They are
the wards of their fathers’ overseas
comrades, the members of the V. F.
W., who voluntarily have assumed
guardianship over these children in
memory of the nation’s soldier dead.
In every detail, the V. F. W. National Home provides its’ young
charges with the life of average, normal young Americans. They attend
the public schools of Eaton Rapids.
The churches of various denominations in the same city afford them
the opportunity to pursue the religious instruction to which they are
individually inclined, At the Home,
they live in family sized houses
which represent the unique “‘cottage
unit” plan of the project. There are
22 of these cottages now occupied,
each of them built or purchased by a
state department of the V. F. W.
Under the personal supervision of
a house-mother who, in several instances, is the, actual mother of one
or more of the children in her care,
a group of perhaps eight or nine boys
and girls of assorted ages, live a typically family life. They are dressed
individually. There are no uniforms
at the V. F. W. National Home, any
more than there are dormitories.
(Moreover the individual children are
fostered and developed. They help
with the housework. The boys help
with the farm work on the.640 acre
farm with its flocks of chickens, its
herd of cattle, its gardens and fruit
trees.
