NEVADA CITY NUGGET MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 1938. ——— eee ee Nevada City Nugget 305 Broad Street. Phone 36. at Nevada City. oe eee Editor and Publisher. Published Semi-Weekly, Monday and Friday at Nevada City, California, and entered as mail matter of the second class ‘n the postoffice at Nevada Ci y, under Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. , SUBSCRIPTION RATES One year (In Advance) a a natasha Ps she se she saa afeate seeks eslestesfe terfests ofc sleifecfesfesteote ste feseeeriet : : Here’s Something To Ty To (From the Sacramento Union Editorial Page) Olson is a radical and the liberal-but-not pinkish Democrats won't vote for him in the November finals if the Republicans can put forward a liberal nominee. That liberal nominee is George C. Hatfield, not Governor Frank F. Merriam, proclaims Lawrence Cobb, former assemblyman and now secretary of the Republican state central committee at Los Angeles. Nominate Merriam and Olson is a cinch to be the next governor, says Mr‘ Cobb, nick-named “Ty” by his friends. But there’s another ““Ty’” Cobb, the real “Ty.” The real ‘“Ty’’ Cobb, who mhoved to San Mateo when his career as the greatest batsman and base runner in the history trades on the glory of a name not his is out before he gets to first base. The real ““Ty’’ Cobb remembers that the _ liberal Democrats DID vote for Merriam in 1934 when Olson was managing the campaign of a ‘socialist author named Upton. Sinclair. A Legal Newspaper, as defined by s atute. Printed and Published t * of ‘baseball was aver, thinks the “Ty” of Los Angeles who! Jusrr WonDER-IN I wonder when a dim, old trail’ Turns from the traveled road away, And leads to some forsaken, camp Where dwell the ghosts of -yesterday, If those who follow understand The forest voices soft and low, The mute, scarred earth, the shattered flume, The ditch through which no waters flow. I wonder if we, who live along the miother lode and in the great valley of the Sacramento, are fully aware of the historic. romantic and dramatic values which surround us. These assets of history and romance, should not be regarded as mere shadows of the past, and of but little worth, gave to the occasional author who exploits them; and substance of the shadows may be made to contribute very materially to the growth and prosperity of.the present; How? First, perhaps by inquiring of ourselves “what would Los Angeles do if she possessed our ruined shrines and Jandmarks?’’ Then follow her example. A recent visitor-to the San Juan Ridge, was greatly interested in the) old brick building at French Corral from which the first long distance ‘Hello’ flew out across the realms of space, and in the silent, yawning chasm which was at one time the roaring American mine. Los Angeles would have both of these attractions neatly fenced and decorated with ‘This Way,” signs. Yet many citizens of Nevada County have never visited either one of them. Yes, we have many historic landmarks which would be of interest to tourists but we, ourselves, must know and appreciaté them, before we can properly introduce them to those who live beyond our borders. I wonder how many residents of Grass Valley have a definite knowledge of the exact spot where gold bearing quartz And the real “Ty” Cobb is going to bat for Merriam again in this campaign. At San Mateo this week, he said: . “I admire Governor Merriam as a man as well as the . things he stands for in public life. . He has both feet on the’ ground at all times. His capable handling of the state’s finances, his grasp of the problems of agriculture and industry and his humanitarian policies appeal to me as reasons why we should keep him at the head of our state government.” Just how heavy a batting average the Los Angeles “Ty” Cobb compiled in the assembly and-in politics, the — records don’t disclose. But they do show that Tyrus Raymond Cobb, the original Georgia Peach, was a .400 mitter. And the August 30 primary will prove he’s still belting line drives to deep right center while the Cobb, Lawrence is popping out. Are We Red? was first discovered? And how many Sacramentons are there . who have never found time to visit the Crocker Art Gallery, . Sutter’s Fort and the Deodor trees in Capitol Park. Really our slogan should be, See Our Own Locality First. . I wonder what would happen if government officials . should run out of subjects for investigation; certainly, many . an ardent soul would find his occupation gone; perhaps the. states would totter. Of course, the average citizen would suf. fer no inconvenience, he is seldom impressed by the wild , hullabaloo, and never receives definite information concern-_ ing the results obtained; in fact, he remains rather casual un-. til an examination of his tax rates, convinces him that he is . being formed to defray expenses. Uncle Silas says: “Our highways would be much safer for motorists and pedestrians, if drivers would realize that they can’t hold cocktails and stering wheels at one and the same time.” —A. California’s reaction to the current Congressional investigation, which has painted some of its citizens — from. thousand-a-week movie stars to quarter-an-hour laborers— . with the red brush of Communism will be a determination to. rid the state of any trace of Communist domination. The Federal sleuths have made definite charges—that movie millionaires are contributing to the cause that will liquidate their fortunes, that alien agitators have won high honors in labor organizations, that federal authorities, instead . t of halting, have aided Communist activity. But what of our own investigators? Have they been able to verify these charges? ‘There is little doubt,”’ says exG-man Maurice Norcop, candidate for State Controller, “that t there are Communists in California. Some have insinuated themselves into our activities. Others have succeeded in dis-. ? guising themselves as labor.leaders. The average worker, however, must not be penalized because a few paid agitators . ? we’ve had a violent desire to use in a large and glittering way for lo! ic’’ and the other “‘moppet.’’ We are very sold on said syllables, they roll off the tongue with such ease, however having no moppets and being desire will have to remain a supfat hens in the throes of death.
