Faw Bi Football Focus By John McAllister Lewis Downtown quarterbacks and football fans all over the country will goon be discussing the strategy, or lack of strategy, displayed’ by their favorite elevens. Cheer leaders will cavort up and, down doing cartwheels and handsprings in front of roaring crowds. Colorful © bands headed by vibrant baton tossers will parade across the green of the ever popular gridiron. Mothers will be telling their football player youngsters not to over do, not to bump any of the other ‘boys too hard, and vice versa. Coaches will have pre. season pep talks and explain to the same aspiring athletes that the way to a first team berth is through hard work, hard contact, hard muscles, and a cooperative spirit. Teachers will be fighting to get the students to bring textbooks instead of footballs to class, and a6 for the football players themselves, oh yes, calisthenics. Adjusting our bifocals first on the local situation in Nevada City we find George Abbott returning a8 + tude.” head coach with a nucleus of varsity veterans, plus some of last year’s Junior Varsity neophytes that show great promise. Consequently, as I see it, the Nevada county seat should be in for a good year. Abbott is. & good mentor, there is an abundance of good experienced material considering the size of the sehool, and the answer lies in one word, *“attiFiret of all leadership is needed, and behind the leader oF . Naturally eompared to is a depth of ma-} This leaders, good followers with ‘wholeme attitude must be developed. This is not saying that they do not possess the albove attributes to some degree, however, any small school with limited players must guard against injuries and concentrate their energies dopbly in Grass Valley on the other hand has, what the majority of high echools all over the country are striving for, that is syétem and organizstion: one big advantage and more facilities. pen chance ‘but comes as an inte established program. ie of a well bl ith the same coaches and seme ‘enthusiastic epirit Grass Valley ‘again will provide all opposition considerable-trouble. True they departing’ from the local scene t me make this non-committal predietion, this year’s Nevada City4Grase Valléy series will be close and as per usual hotly contested. Next, diploma or no diploma, here we go to college. Notre Dame, a name often associated with béetter football, again ‘will have tripie threat Johnny Lujack at the hélm, and experienced players three teams deep. I can remember a few years ago the Irish were worried a6 to whether or not Lujack could fill the cleats. of Angelo Bertelli, the worry has long since been extinguished. Still touring the mid-west ‘we suddenly meet up with Fritz Crisler and the Michigan juggernaught. Personnel physical contact with the Ann Arbor boys a few years back makes my respect for them very high and despite the fact Crisler has yet to win an undisputed Big Ten championship, we must remember how often they have been run— nersup.
