;
A woman who is the patron saint of 300; American sky
pilots, stunt flyers and war aces, and one of the West's most
brilliant surgeons, this week is planning to forsake her California home and career.for makeshift hospitals in the shellraked iront lines of Chinas war zones.
This story of valor and self-sacrifice is another chapter in . .
the life history of Dr. Margaret Chung
But like many women before her in time of war, she has
wanted to place her knowledge at the disposal of the wounded and suffering combatants. Self-sacrifice and helping the
needy, however, are peace time as well as war-time jobs, and)
she has known both kinds.
1 The oldest of eleven children, she was born in Santa Barbara, California, the daughter of a fruit and vegetable dealer
whose top earnings never exceeded $45 a month. Determined
to become a practicing physician, she worked her wey tascuch
the University of Southern California Medical School then
served as interne in a Los Angeles hospital.
Hewing faithfully to the course she set for herself, she:
worked several years in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital
and in the psychiatric clinic of Dr. Herman Adler in Chicage
Then she set herself up in independent practice in San Fon
_ cisco.
Not content with having achieved her own goal. she cent
her ten younger brothers and sisters through high school. An
aviation enthusiast, she has captured the affection and homage of hundreds of American flyers to whom she is “Mors.”
Though she now leaves for a country she has never seen
"4m. order to give its wounded and dying defenders the benefit
of years of hospital experience, she leaves behind her a vivid
example of industry and courage.—Contributed.

. Secretary,
usr WONDER IN’
=
I wonder when vacation ends
And sober duties reappear,
To say, “come now, attend to us
For the remainder of the year,”
Have our vacations really been
All we intended them to be,
And if we gained the powers we need
From stream and hill and forest tree.
I wonder if your vacation was entirely
Strange, but
wer.
One friend er mine started off in fine fettle to spend a
restful fortnight in a aut retreat far removed from business
andsocial activities of any sort: She was swooped down upon
by well miéaning but exasperating relatives and whisked away
to visit other relatives whose widely scattered homes were
reached via rough mountain roads which at times dwindled to
mere plate rails and skirted abysmal chasms down which she
looked and shuddered.
During these tiresome and nerve racking journeys, she
shared the rumble seat of her cousin's tricky aritermblele with.
his unruly ten year old son. She was entertained at isolated
farm dwellings’ where barn yard voices cackled. crowed,
satisfactory.
. quacked, gobbled and mooed all day and dogs barked all
night. She ‘slept, -or tried to sleep, in wnicortortable beds, ate
uncomforting food, and listened to interminable and oft repeated tales concerning family affairs, history and scandal until her brain reeled and reason lay supine.
She returned home tired in mind and body, with nerves
frazzled and temper frayed; she had indigestion, a shocking
cold, poison oak on face, hands and arms and painful stoge
bruises upon both heels. A memorable vacation? Yes, but
that’s not the word she uses when describing it.
Another friend spent a large portion of his vacation tending a garden. Roses bloomed for him, seeds he planted came]
up, vines and little plants grew with miraculous rapidity and
produced vegetables each after its own kind.
I wonder what these hours of contact with living and
growing things meant to, this cultured, high minded pentleman. Some time . intend to ask him.
I wonder if Messrs. Green and Lewis signed disir vacations. Probably one of them did; I’m not so sure about the
other. for—
Little ohn Green has lost his sheep
And don’t know where to find them;
They've scampered away to another fold
With the C. I. O. behind them,
Uncle Silas just returned from his vacation reports, that
many absent minded hitch hikers were—picked up.
