American Women’s Freelom
=
The recent ninety-first anniversary of the first women’s
tights convention in the United States was observed as ““Woman’s Independence Day.”
The average American woman, however, probably passsed it by without any special recognition or observance. The
woman of today—regardless whether she lives on a farm, keer
house, or works in an office—will find it hard to envienoe +
day in which women did not have the freedom to nermit their
ll participation in the world in which we live. The progress
“of independence for women has kept pace with the material
“and industrial growth of the nation and they have shared in
‘the nation’s nrogress and wealth.
ire Now that women in other parts of the world are losing
‘their freedom and find their rights abrogated by dictatorial
*édicts and collectivism the’ American “Woman's Independ‘ence Day” should be ob-erved everv dav. And it shorld take
he form of a creater interest in those things which safeguard
that independence.

ember 7 on the fantastic: Ham and Eggs scheme, the disruption of State and school funds if it should pass, and the obstac‘les meanwhile to California financing, all are mortally serious.
Yet they perhaps are less in terms of human equation than
the bitter disappointment awaiting thousands of older percons deluded by the dazzling fallacies of the scheme.
The fallacy lies in the fervid assurance that “‘it will not
cost anyone anything,’ and the mass of argument to prove
needs only faith to make it work.
This is the pitiable feature of the Ham and Eggs cam-paizn to give everyone over 50 years of age Thirty Dollars
Everv Thursday in warrants that will be redeemable when
$1.04 in stamns have been affixed for each $1 of face value.
Obviously, if such a scheme were feasible, it could be
put into operation without any establishment of a $50,000,000 State Credit Bank, or appropriations to carry it on, or
tinkering with tax laws, sales taxes and the wages of public
employes. And obviously any bank will give a customer $1
‘or $1.04 in nennies, which is what the State would be directed to do with warrants carrying $1.04 in State issued stamps
The army of believers who contribute their penny a day
to put the.scheme across are sincere believers in it. They are
in many cases citizens who would spurn a welfare pension, or
dependency upon others. And they are indignant with refusal
to put into effect a perpetual mo
The speious arguments made to prove the validity of this
scheme and the enthusiasm with which its followers accept
them, present a genuine menace in this special election. For
‘the followers will turn out and vote as one.
The Ham and Eggs scheme is both dangerous and cruel

foundations upon which the freedom of all of our people rests,

ing machine and that of his ally
Mussolini on the battlefield.
Entering into, and ‘complicating this crisis are various factors.
‘One of which is that the Polish
people have learned their lesson
from the Munich Pact and now
know what to expect from any
agreement with Hitler. The Poles
are a proud people and even without the experience of Czecho-Slovakia before them, know from the
bitter memory of their previous
bondage to Germany before the
World War, what to expect from
Nazi rule. The Poles it seems assured, will fight .whether Chamberlain supports them or not.
They have suffered too much for
their present independence to go
down without a struggle. If the
,Poles resist, undoubtedly other
‘powers will be drawn into the conflict immediately.
