Seattle—Educational and employment leaders are workang on a program to prepare thousands of women to step into
defense industries shou!d the need arise.
Philadelphia—Attractive young girls are, being put to
work as filling station attendants. __
San Diego—Consolidated Aircraft corporation plans to
hire women for mechanical work. ne
_ These instances could be multiplied over and over again
—and they all add up to the fact that a war economy, as one
of its blessing in-disguise helps to bring a measure of sexual
equality in the nation’s factories, offices, fields, and shops.
It is an undeniable fact, though perhaps @ great pity, that
‘democratic America in normal times is forced to talk about
its constitutionally guaranteed equality.of.race.and sex as
something still to be achieved or something that exists in
theory only. ee
The only reason why women are being trained and enLesa \euvuvomnsbuswcuute $3.00

couraged now to do work that previously. has been regarded:
as ‘men’s jobs’, of course, is that the nation faces an acute
labor shortage, and is being forced to tap this great untouched labor pool.
In 1917 and 1918, when the nation’s productive machinery was running full tilt and many of its men were either
overseas or being trained to go over, economic equality between the sexes became more of an accomplished fact than
ever before.
Women began taking over men’s jobs in factories, offices and shops at a tremendous rate. And they were paid wages
which would have looked good to most men a year or two
earlier.

I wonder, little pixie thoughts,
That come to one quite willy-nilly,
If you have power within yourselves
To make one permanently silly.
I wonder how everyday folk can keep from turning mental sommersaults, when great minds of earth are so_ eerily
acrobatic. For instance, noted scientists are debating the question, “are babies human?’’ Of course babies are human and
the younger they are, the humaner. All scientists should know
this, if they are not far advanced toward their own second
babyhood, which is not at all unlikely.
Even more significant as a long term trend, however, was
the fact that the war ended the notion that a woman's place
was in the home, and did away with the social taboos against
many kinds of work that had been regarded as unladylike in
the pre-war years. .
To an extent; this condition was temporary, and ended
when the boys came home from Europe to replace the women
who had moved into their jobs. There were enough women .
who proved their worth and kept their jobs, however, so that
the 20’s and 30's became years in which thousands of women
had a chance to make good on careers that previously had
been denied them.
» But throughout the labor movement during these years,
there lingered a prejudice against women and Negro laborers,
due principally to the fact that these groups were lower-salaried competitors of white male workers.
Now we are in another period where there is a crying
need for skilled and semi-skilled labor—whether it be white or
black,.male-or female. And by. the time this trend has run its
course. we may exvect to find that the process of equality
which was started in the first World War has been carried a
Jot closer to its conclusions by the second one.

A few wierd lanes of thought seem to be closed, at least
erpereiy. That old thing called “pernicious animal mag. netism, “‘must have been definitely abandoned. If there were
now such a thing, it would have been worked on Hitler long
ste this.
Not long ago I heard two ladies talking about reincarna_tion, but not with the enthusiasm of old. With the world qutie
berserk, reincarnation isn’t so appealing. Once away from the
general madness, who wishes to come back and take the
chance of finding conditions unimproved?
That reminds me of a little story concerning Ella Whee!er Wilcox. Ella was a reincarnationist. Once in speaking of
her belief to a group of friends, she declared that she remembered previous states of existence. She had been the Queen
of Sheba. Ella reported details in a rather convincing manner
and the listeners were all agog until one irreverent person
said, “Ella, you were not the Queen of Sheba, you were one
of the five foolish virgins.”’
I once knew a woman who declared herself to be ‘‘an old
soul’’. She traveled a great .deal and was always coming upon
places that she had visited in a previous state of existence. She
had a marvelous memory—why, that woman could remember events which happened when she was a mere infant. Well;
so can I.
I seem to recall one crowded hour of my own inglorious
infancy. I, at the age of six weeks, was arrayed in. robes of
state and taken to a place called church. This being my first
public appearance, . was peered at and oh-ahed over by
friends of the family until an organ sounded and the meeting
was called to order. After preliminary ceremonies, . was
borne down the aisle and presented to an important personage
who uttered strange words and did things with water. One
big drop ran down my nose, took off and cracked up on my
chin. Up to that moment, my behavior had been exemplary,
but now . shrieked, waved my arms and kicked till my long,
flowing garments rose and fell like Pharphar’s far famed
fountain.

Do I remember all that? Of course not. The fact is, that
in later times, I heard the awful scene described so often by .
“ousins, aunts and uncles, that it formed one of those mental
images which are so often mistaken for personal recollection.
So. if you visit a strange place and find it vaguely familiar, don't go esoteric. No doubt you have seen pictures of the
place, a colored post card, or have heard it described by some
one who had visited the scene.
Uncle Silas says: “I hope that the marked similarity between the inspired utterances of Hitler's mouthpieces and
those of ex-Colonel Lindberg are purely coincidental.
