BE DEDICATED SATURDAY CAeTON IRE. August 24— The Pelton monument ts finished, the forms ate being taken down, everything being touched up and in shape for the dedication ceremony Saturday. The monument stands eleven feet in the air, and is 110X110 feet at the base, its building consumed 6000 pounds of cement a ton of iron, ten yards of gravel and a large quantity of foundation rock. The weight all in all is over 139,500 pounds. The large bronze tablet, weighing over 90 pounds is placed in the front of the column, the small bronze wheel above it; and the 14 inch old type Pelton wheel at the top. A platform is being #rected at the front from which the ceremony will be held. The Grand Lodge of Masons of California,, will be convened at three o’clock at the local a George L. Jones of Nevada City, and will then proceed to the monument to conduct the éeremony. Judge Edward W. Engs of Sierra county will deliver the oration. Musical numbers ‘wil also be given. The first Pelton wheel which is owned by the Groves family will be put on display the day of the ceremony as well as a large photograph of the pioneer inventor. Following the ceremony at night, a bess benefit dance will be held, dan a until daylight, with a big midnight supper. A fine orchestra from Marysville, with lots of pep and putting forth the latest and best in dance music has been obtained. A fine supper will be served and everyone is guaranteed a good time, Two of the worst forest fires of the season broke out Monday joon near Lohmans Ranch and Pike City, about a mile apart. The local department got right on the job and within the afternoon a large crew in the .neighborhood of seventy five men Were on the scene battling the flames. The crew of the. Oak Valley Lumber Company was. called into service as well as al] idle men in the loeality. The fire was in a thick wooded section and with a stiff breeze made fighting it. quite difficult. The fire was put under jcontrol Monday night, and partly got away again by the wind on Tuesday but was again controlled. George Butz had the misfortune. of eutting his foot with an axe quite badly and had to return. A second forest fire broke out Sunday at Sandusky Crek near Forest City, but was soon put under control by the local department. B. F. MeNaught and Seymore Smith of the Halkyard mine, returned Saturday from a brief business visit to the south. Eugene H.
