MONDAY a FORMER RESIDENTIS = ~ HONORED BY FRIENDS The following clipping taken from the Norwalk Cali of recent date tells of a former resident of this section, Mrs. Sarah Bremond, whose husband built and operated a hotel at Lake City during the Malakoff mine boom. Among Mrs. Bremond’s schoolmates -now in Nevada City are Mrs. M. Grimes and Miss Kittie Hurley. The clipping follows: Thursday, July 18, some of Mrs. M. C. F. Vaunt Abbott’s -old time friends surprised her with a party to celebrate her 84th birthday. Two of the women. Mrs. R. E. Dolley of Seal Beach and Mrs. Minnie Thompson of Bellflower said that Mrs. Abbott was the first neighbor to eall on them when they moved to California. Among those present was Mrs. Sarah Bremond of Norwalk. Mrs. Bremond’s husband is the son of the original Bremond that owned the first r'rench hotel at Saeramento, ; The most interesting entertainment of the afternoon was an exciting experience of each of the mcmbers present that happened to them in some of the days gone by.” Marea Clotilde Falicity Vaunt Abbott came to California in one of the boats owned by Vaunt and Bremond to the San Francisco’ bay in 1850. Vaunt and Bremoud owned the first French Hotel of Sacramento. Mrs. Abbott came to Artesia, Lus Angeles county, in 1875 where her home was on the road of the freight teams. that went north © from Anaheim Landing. She well remembers the sheep range where Long Beach now stands on the way to Portuguese fish camp, at a Httle place ealled San Pedro. Mrs. Abbott made a trip once every week to Los Angeles with butter and e&gs, when Third Street was out of town. The Turner and Lambourn’§ firms were the biggest stores in the city and * they worked as many as four men on Saturday afternoons. When Los Angeles went to putting such unheard of things as eobble stones in the streets for those poor horses to walk on it was time to hunt other streets, You could ride a whole mile in a_ street car pulled by a horse. The only railroad entering Los Angeles at that Southern Pacific. Mrs. Abbott had to pass one house { sand between Artesia and Anaheim, 2 distance of ten miles, and if you could. not speak German it required time for trading. The town of Anahiem took up most of a two block space and Artesia was a two room school house, the starter of all small towns at that time and an artesian well for a sheep range. The city of Norwalk was composed of a depot, general store of one man capacity, a saloon and a blacksmith shop. ‘Santa Ana at that time was in Los Angeles county. She raised a family of stx and new has two sons living. Fred, who is her care at the x —ery _ AUGUST 26, 1929 4 [5 FTA EAGT TTR RE ETT YI . sae mee ——— COURT HOUSE RECORDS Deeds “W. A.
