> FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 1935. THE NEVADA CITY NUGGET A composite letter from the three scouts, Dick Marriott, Ray Wilde and Albert Pratti now on tour of the United States was yesterday received by the Nevada City Nugget. It follows: Leaving Salt Lake City at 8:30 Wednesday evening we arrived at Grand Junction, Colorado, at 5 o’clock in the morning. For several hours after that we followed the beautiful Colorado rive through the beautiful country. At two in the afternoon we reached the Royal Gorge and Royal Gorge and the Arkansas river. The train stopped there ten minutes for us to view the Hanging Bridge over the river 1600 feet high, The train stopped at Pueblo a few miles below the Gorge and there was a rush for souvenirs. Here we changed to the Santa Fe, which made very fast time to Chicago. We arrived in Chicago the next afternoon, stopping on the way at La Junta to. be entertained by some scouts performing Indian dances. CHICAGO SIGHT SEEING Our troop was lucky in getting the top of the first double decker bus in Chicago for sight seeing. We took a two hour bus tour around the city and along Lake Michigan. After supper a visit was made to the Adjer Planetarium, an exhibit remaining from the World’s Fair. The scouts exclaimed this to be the most wonderful exhibit they had ever seen. Leaving Chicago at midnight on the Michigan Central we arrived in Dearborn at seven in the morning. Here the scouts were taken in -fifteen new Bord buses on a two hour tou through the Ford plant. Following that they viewed Ford’s famous Greenfield village, which was probably the most educational part of _ the trip. The fellows got a kjick out of riding on the old coaches and carriages around the village; getting out here and there to visit the numerous historical buildings. NIAGARA FALLS Saturday afternoon was spent in riding across Canada. We were igspected by the customs officials 04 the border across the river fro« Detroit. The train stopped at Falls View on the Canadian side, this was our first view of the falls. We then crossed to the American side, and our troop took a two hour ride in cars around the different parts of the falls and river and whirlpools. In going into Canada again were again inspected by officials, also on returning ‘to the United States. In the evening we had the opportunity. of seeing the Falls lighted up. We left on the New York Central at 9 that evening and arrivea in West Point at seven o’clock in the morning. We marched around viewing the grounds at West Point and then attending Sunday chureh services with the cadets in the open. Following this our troop visited with the two cadets at the academy from our council. They. were Elliott Ank, of Roseville and Warren Chapman of Nevada City. Both were glad to see us and told us about their ‘experiences there. Elliott is in his second year. Warren ‘had been there only two weeks. IN NEW YORK Arrival in New York City was made at noon Sunday. After getting settled in our hotel and eating we started on an afternoon tour around the city. We took a ferry out to the Statue of Liberty and climbed up It is 301 feet high. In the evening we visited Radio City. This visit surprised the scouts beyond astonishment. Seeing radio into the top of it. couts Write of Tour of Nation’s Big Cities ' aboard the largest ship in the world night view of New. York City was seen. Monday morning the Empire State Building was visited. It is 1250 feet high, 308 stories and takes a minute to reach the top in an elevator. Most of the fellows sent telegrams home or to friends from the top of the building at special ates. A wonderbuilding at special rates. A wonderfrom the top. Later. in the morning our troop visited the National Council office of the Boy Scouts of America at 2 Park Avenue. Here Chiew Scout Executive West personally . presented. each Scout in our troop . with a jamboree neckerchief and . neckerchief slide. On our way back . to dinner we stopped at thé Boy Seout Trading Post, where all. the boy scout ifficial equipment is sold. NORMANDIE INSPECTED ‘That afternoon we saw the New York Giants play the Cincinnati baseball team. The Giants won 4-5. Wednesday morning everybody went the Normandie which was docked about eight blocks from the hotel. This huge ship was a city in itself accompanying 2200 passengers. That afternoon we were the guests Jack Dempsey at his. cafe where he personally greeted each scout and gave him a souvenir sports book. The scouts enjoyed rides on the elevated railroads, the new 8th Avenue Subway which travels about 70 miles an hour, traveling 65 blocks.in 5% minutes. Leaving Jersey City at midnight Tuesday, we arrived in Philadelphia in the morning at seven. We visitea Independence Hall, saw the Liberty Bell, but did not get a chance to ring it. Saw where Washington was first inaugurated as President. The scouts were awed by the very narrow streets in Philadelphia;. some of the main streets being only wide enough for one way traffic. Everyone saw the home of the Flag of our country at Betsey Ross’s home on Arch street. Around the corner from this place is Christ church. In Philadelphia we visited also Scout Headquarters, natural museum and the city park, before leaving for Washington, D. C. : ed the site where the. Jamboree tents and camping equipment erected. We were there on the opening day August 21. A stop was made at Arlington Cemetery, viewing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; then Lincoln Memorial and.the Mall. After eating supper a two hou tour was taken around the city seeing the government buildings and the parks. This tour ended at the White House to see and listen to the broadcast of the President to the scouts all over the country. Through misunderstanding at the last minute we were not able to see. it.
