beginning the yearly labo of keeping a reef over all the heads and the
pot boiling, until spring again ends

Another month and it will be October and your correspondent wili
Ihave worked for the Nugget one
year. It might be interesting, for a
‘brief moment, to glance back and .
note the physical changes one year’s
time has wrought on the San Juan
Ridge and elsewhere. I've. always
found the fall of the year.a good
time to take personal invoice and}
restock with a brand new order before winter makes me “hole up,’ as
it were. »
We had better make a list of the
“things we will need as we go along.
Off-hand I can recall-:that my pen
has sketched eulogy for more than
one dear neighbor who has staked
off a claim in the new “diggins”’
across the Great Divide. We still
miss those faces, both young and .
old, and on our list we should make
a note to store up fortitude and
‘deeper love for our fellowmen.
I am sure it has been my g0o0d
fortune to report the birth of a tiny
girl here—a husky boy there. That
means a great reserve of strength,
patience and understanding must be
jaid up for the little lives entrusted
to our care.
Many of us are past the time
when little onés will come to us but
we can remember our own childhood
and our children’s children when the
time comes tO donate a dollar to a .

And what about marriages? Very .

who have come to my notice in the ;
past year. What have they decided
for the future? All of us who have .
had years of matrimonial experience .

those little brides and their young .
husbands have decided. Those who

be placed in one of. these classes for
the feeble-minded, however, every
one would recognize that he was not
receiving his full educational opportunity. As far as measurements
can determine, the abilities of the
boy or girl of 130 or 14 intelligence ‘quotient are as much above the
average child’s as the average child’s
is above the feeble minded. Yet any
attempt to provide special classes

denounced as undemocratic.”
As a result, the United States survey of education shows nearly. twenty times as many teachers assigned

There need even no great increase in the total teaching staff. All
that is necessary is competent teachers, and the privilege for these children of being placed with others
like themselves to work well together. Class work can then proceed at
a pace to keep these children from
idling and losing interest; and time
ean be found for additional subjects,
such as applied science, fine arts,
typewriting or business law.”
One day a young lady with a
poodle dog on her lap was riding in
a street car. A prim woman. sitting
next to her sniffed: ‘‘What a fuss
you make over that dog. Don’t you
think it ‘would be nicer if you had a
little baby in your lap?”’
“‘No,’’ the pretty one replied.
I’m not married.”’
