= ’ PAGE FOUR THE NEVADA CITY NUGGET @ FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 1935. SS Have You 9 Heard a ‘By KATE LEWIS another week it will be September with vacation for the children definitely over and parents, busy as ants, beginning the yearly labo of keeping a reef over all the heads and the pot boiling, until spring again ends ‘the terms. Another month and it will be October and your correspondent wili Ihave worked for the Nugget one year. It might be interesting, for a ‘brief moment, to glance back and . note the physical changes one year’s time has wrought on the San Juan Ridge and elsewhere. I've. always found the fall of the year.a good time to take personal invoice and} restock with a brand new order before winter makes me “hole up,’ as it were. » We had better make a list of the “things we will need as we go along. Off-hand I can recall-:that my pen has sketched eulogy for more than one dear neighbor who has staked off a claim in the new “diggins”’ across the Great Divide. We still miss those faces, both young and . old, and on our list we should make a note to store up fortitude and ‘deeper love for our fellowmen. I am sure it has been my g0o0d fortune to report the birth of a tiny girl here—a husky boy there. That means a great reserve of strength, patience and understanding must be jaid up for the little lives entrusted to our care. Many of us are past the time when little onés will come to us but we can remember our own childhood and our children’s children when the time comes tO donate a dollar to a . fund for a public swimming pool, . sclfool bonds or attending an enter. tainment for the boy scouts And what about marriages? Very . —¢tlearly I remember the newly weds . who have come to my notice in the ; past year. What have they decided for the future? All of us who have . had years of matrimonial experience . booked to our credit know what! those little brides and their young . husbands have decided. Those who “Wave the real stuff in them and will . in time make true American citizens; —they have discovered the little hu-/ man faults in one another and have. ¢earefuliy weighed them along with, their own shortcomings and decidea . it’s a fifty-fifty. game—and worth . the battle. They will stay married to. , each other and take whatever' life 4aas to offer them with a grin. There sameeren. a bene. will be no useless quareling, whimpering or regret. And what about us, boys and girls! who are a bit grey where it shows ihe most and £0 fumbling around for! four: when the de. . jlivered? When we get our venerable theads together this ube 3 for a rubglasses paper is ber of bridge or a bit of “tonic” let’s remember to be above all things, ttolerent. For instance, there’s the little girl} ‘who likes to dance all night and! * . maore than likely smokes too much— but let’s remember she is plenty .defective as to special BRIGHT PUPILS NEGLECTED IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS BERKELEY, Avg. 29.—One of! the most difficult problems confronting educators is how to provide for the boy or girl of high intelligence . in a school system which ,.must ‘de . planned for those. of average abil. ity. This stadily more serious, according to Professor . Noel Keys of the University of Cahiissue is becoming fornia, department of education. “The Dr. Keys, the part of the public. rightly have special schools. or classes for the mentally handicapped, since. such children cannot do the work of the regular groups. lisa child of average intelligence had to be placed in one of. these classes for the feeble-minded, however, every one would recognize that he was not receiving his full educational opportunity. As far as measurements can determine, the abilities of the boy or girl of 130 or 14 intelligence ‘quotient are as much above the average child’s as the average child’s is above the feeble minded. Yet any attempt to provide special classes for those of exceptional cacapity denounced as undemocratic.” As a result, the United States survey of education shows nearly. twenty times as many teachers assigned to special classes for the mentally classes for These task is made harder,” -said ; “by misunderstanding on . Most. cities pupils of unusual talents. . of society. ‘which call for ; dren from six to fourteen, 'telligence quotients over figdres are for city sohsol apeioria, and quite apart from the many state and private institutions. for the mentally handicapped. Even in California the ratio is nearly ten to one. Yet bright children are as numerous as the feebleminded, and infinitely more important for the future It is to these gifted few we must look for solutions. to our . most difficult human. problems and leadership in all undertakings keen and sustained for thinking. “Any city over Professor Keys points out, thirty thousand,”’ “should ; have enough very bright pupils to justify special classes groups. San . Francisco has fifteen hundred chilwith in125. These would make forty or fifty full sized classes. “No expensive special equipment is required, such as is often the case . , the be with schools for handicapped. There need even no great increase in the total teaching staff. All that is necessary is competent teachers, and the privilege for these children of being placed with others like themselves to work well together. Class work can then proceed at a pace to keep these children from idling and losing interest; and time ean be found for additional subjects, such as applied science, fine arts, typewriting or business law.” One day a young lady with a poodle dog on her lap was riding in a street car. A prim woman. sitting next to her sniffed: ‘‘What a fuss you make over that dog. Don’t you think it ‘would be nicer if you had a little baby in your lap?”’ “‘No,’’ the pretty one replied. I’m not married.”’ “You see, Used Traded on the Trucks New V-8 and Pleasure Your Own Terms and Guaranteed by Your Ford Dealer — WEBB MOTORS GRASS VALLEY NEVADA CITY Gold Medal GUERNSEY MILK That won highest award in California at State Fair 1931—1932—-1933 NEVADA CIty BRET HARTE DAIRY, U.
