iThe Nevada County USDA War
Board announces that further ‘unfreezing’yYof farm machinery topped
the news of interest to Nevada
County farmers this week. Under
terms of farm machinery rationing
order C, which supplants the recent
temporary order B, procedure is set
up for rationing by county USDA
War Board farm machinery rationing boards. Boards may immediately
ration machinery in the hands of the
dealers and certain other machinery,
including farm pumps and windmills,’
irrigation equipment, dairy milk
cans, and fencing. State and county
quotas on other machinery in the.
hands of manufacturers and distributors are being set up. Local boards
will ration from these quotas.
FARM WAR NEWS
The Nevada-County USDA: War
‘Board announces that because of
labor shortages and other production problems, an alarming number
of California dairy cows have been
slaughtered in recent months. Due to
increased population, dairy needs of
the state will be heavier than ever
during the coming year, so it is essential that production be maintained. Any farmer who finds it necessary to dispose of a dairy type cow
is urged to get in touch with the
county USDA Board at Grass Valley.
AVOID RACING ENGINE
Racing a cold engine burns gasoline just as though > the car were
speeding, says the California State
Automobile Association. Phe choke
should be closed as soon as the engine runs evenly, to prevent excess
fuel being drawn into the cylinders
and wasted. Cars with automatic
choke should be driven slowly until
the engine warms up.
VICTORY FOOD SPECIALS
Grapefruit has been designated
as a “Victory Food Special’ for the
period December 3 to 12. This bumper erop is now hitting the peak of
its market season. To meet increased feed needs in 1943, corn acreage
allotments in the midwestcommercial-corn belt ‘have been increased 5
per cent.
LOWLY ITEMS GONE TO WAR .
The familiar galvanized garbage
pail. and water bucket have gone to
war. To save zinc,
all galvanized ware has been greatly restricted. Since farmers who do
not receive regular monthly incomes
readily adopt the payroll savings
plan, they are urged to adopt the
i!slogan ‘‘make every market day bond
day’’ and set aside a portion of the
proceeds of every sale of farm products for war bonds.

. Cream for Coffee But
i\No Whipping Cream 2
To combat a ciiecal butter shoriage, the WPB prohibited dairy producers from distributing whipping
cream or other heavy cream. The
order does not affect coffee cream
and does not apply to any farmer
who delivers up to four quarts of
heavy cream per day if his deliveries averaged less than one gallon
daily in the three months’ ended
November 25.

CAR DRIVERS. DO COOPERATE ty
The Public Roads. Administration
said its surveys show the average
speed of passenger cars on rural
highways since the institution of the
35 mile an hour speed limit has been
;reduced to 37 miles per hour and
trucks to 36 miles per hour. Another
. survey showed that in 12 war plants
lin six states the majority of the em. ployees travel to work by automobiles. Office of Defense Transport-:
ation Director. Eastman recommend-.
ed that buses and stret cars space
their stopping places in cities at distances from 600 to 1200 feet. He
said any distance less than 500 feet
would be wasteful of rubber, gasoline and equipment.
