LABOR DUE TO SPECIALIZATION BERKELEY, Dec. 10. — The introduction of irrigation and intensive farming into California during the past forty years paved the way for the army of racially varied migratory workers whohave taken the place of the typical farm hand and now dominate the rural scene. This statement is made by Dr. Paul S. Taylor, associate professor of economics at the University of California and Tom Vasey, field investigator for the Resettlement Administration, in an article publishea recently in Rural Sociology. In less than a century of agricultural history, says ithe article, farm work in California ‘has been handled successively by ranch hands,. farm hamds, rralized proletarians. Three distinct trends ‘in the use of California farm lands have influenced the type of labor which dominated at any one time. The first period of the Spanish ranches and herds was succeeded after 1849 by a period of cultivation and extensive crop-growing. During this period of increasing population and farm settlement the place of the herder was taken by the typical white farm laborer. Since 1890, however, the type of California agriculture has changed once more. The significant feature of the past forty years has been the intensification of the use of areas already under cultivation. This intensive farming, based on _irrigation, say the authors, has replaced the farm hand with the vast numbers of hand-laborers who now travel the highways-in search of work.
