‘i vad City Nugget Out Loud me alanine This is written in memory of a man, a friend, and a citizen, Wal ter L. Mobley whose long and serviceable life was spent in this county. ‘We would like to point out to young men who may think that life nowadays offers no opportunities for doing and achiev ing, even with all the advantages that modern shools can give, ‘that here was a ‘man who overcame all . handicaps of his time, who succeeded in life. We do not mean that he piled up a fortune, but we do-mean that when the end now: comes, hosts of friends in every walk of life mourn his passing. A long. life of service had won him this incomparable guerdon. He lov ed his fellow men. He served them both in private and public capacity. His generous nature knew no bounds, Though the phrase is his was the soul of honer. We cannot refrain, here and now, from bitterly lamenting the mon stros injustice that was done him in the closing years of his life. An injustice that struck deeper because of his fine pride in his lA own integrity. His friends far and near condoled with him and assured him of their profound faith in that character he had built enduringly through the years. But the poison of false accusation, the _ Vol. 13, No. 99. ‘vants of cheap, charges innocent man, worked like a slow corrosive upon the mind and body of Judge Mobley. , A water collector is to be appoint ed at a special meeting of the Nevada City council this evening. Lei those sterling attributes of character reflected in the’ mind and relationships of Judge Mobley with his fellow men, but it was only under the tremendous trial of this catastrophe, that we really plumbed the quiet strength of the man. It has been truly said and often proved that adversity tests a man. Too often the stresses dis cover weakness, but not in Judge Mobley. In the midst of his own grief at the intolerable burden thrust upon him, he found time to give a helping hand and_ to bring comfort to others in need of sympathy and aid. Mobley was L. W., type of American citizen that is becoming rarer. That neighborly and help ful interest in all those that came in contact with him, and in his post, as justice of the peace, that human understanding, charity for the man or woman in trouble, are not often found either in plublic or private life today. His justice he tempered with mercy. He trusted in kindness» more than in harshness. Many a man in Nevada county will remember today the man who proved to be his friend, when the rest of the world had apparently condemned him. In another column will be found a brief sketch of Judge Mobley’s life. It is only a brief out line of his 74 years, but we know it was filled with those things which comprise the life of a good man, a good neighbor, a good cit izen, and, in this instance, a good . public servant. His warm affection for his mestic the children, his happy do life, his boyhood years in stirring days of the great Malakoff diggings, ‘his responsibilities as the manager and partner in a large mercantile enterprise, responsibilities carried always with faithful loyalty both to clients and business associates, and finally the more than twelve years he served Nevada township as justice of the peace, cannot be justly compressed either in this appreciation of the man, or in the obituary in the news columns. But we iknow. that Judge Mobley will be remembered through the years for all those fine attributes that mark American citizenship at its best. HOPPIN ANOY~ ron ME Get pANoy* by phoning the sale 100.
